@thyco.
That's exactly what I have been experiencing. I just played another game (not a tutorial mission this time) and I was able to defeat my opponent easily. However, I noticed again that he was able to level up to stay only one level behind me and he was also able to build and finish a wonder way to early in the game than is normal for an easy opponent. I have never experienced an AI like this in similar games (Age of Empires, Empire Earth.....). I am going to play a game without the trainer to see whether it is somehow connected.
Update: I just finished a quick game without using the trainer (enemy still on easiest) and the distance (leveling up, wonders) between the opponent and me was about the same as with the trainer. This AI seems to somehow keep up, no matter what, but the trainer doesn't seem to trigger that effect.

ya, this the only game thats done that, even the original version did it. Its due to how the difficulty levels work.
On the lowest setting the AI will never move to the next age until you do and when it does it wil be about 30-90sec later. every other difficulty setting affects when the AI will advance to the next age
Edit: if you want to have some fun though, you create a custom game and set it so that the computer will only use a selected Age and you can use all them. i believe the setting is called barbarians at the gate

The game does indeed feature a catch-up mechanic for the AI depending on difficulty level. On the lowest difficulty the AI won't pass the player's age for example, and on moderate it won't advance more than one age ahead of the player.

Thanks for the quick update. Just once I would like to buy a game that doesn't need an update 24 hours after it launches. I may be wrong, but what are they paying the tester for....
Anyway thanks again for the update and adding the extra options.
