Try (re)installing .NET framework 4.5 and see if that helps because the game is using that framework. Apart of that it can only be you are trying to use the features not as stated in the notes.

Just wanted to let you know that I'm fairly certain the trainer does not actually work, at least with the current (1.3) build. I have followed the instructions exactly (start a game, open inventory, pick up an item from inventory and place it in any slot, then hit F1) but the trainer won't activate, can't find game code. I've also experimented by picking up an item from inventory and activating while still having the item selected, as well as picking up/placing from both the primary slots and the main inventory. None of them will allow the trainer to activate. I'm running .Net 4.5.1, and every other trainer that requires .Net 4.5 runs fine. So unless the requirements for activating are other than stated in the readme and this page, then the trainer does not work on current build.

Okay try to collect some meat from pigs for example. Then open your inventory. Then collect some more meat from another pig and reopen the inventory. Press F1, it should find the code now.
You could also collect logs from woods or whatever else. It is just important that the quantity gets updated somehow.

Because it works on my end the way I've told there is not much I can do. But I would like to take a look at your problem via teamviewer. Perhaps the instructions aren't that clear to you as to me. Let me know.

    I'm having the same problem

so let me figure this out, so I open inventory click on an item (so that it's picked up) press f1 (which also makes the window size smaller) and if it worked the values will appear in the trainer? if so I did that and I got an error box with your name in the top left (0x90) and it says cannot find game code.

I hadn't tried re-collecting and re-opening the inventory, then activating after that. So, I'll give it a shot, then edit this post with results! Thanks for trying to help figure it out!

Edit: No Dice. So frustrating, not being able to figure out what's wrong lol. Here's detailed steps about what I did, in case it helps identify the problem.

Created a new character (no changes made to default character, normal human with whatever stats and traits were rolled) and started playing. Killed stuff to get an assortment of materials (Pelts, Raw Meat, Bones, Wood and Stone.) Opened Inventory, moved stuff around in there (following the Pick-up and place method in original instructions.) Went and killed more stuff, got more Bones, Raw Meat, Wood. Opened Inventory again, moved stuff around again, tried to activate trainer. Could not find game code. Tried closing and reopening inventory, picking up an item and activating trainer while item was being held. Could not find game code. Decided to continue playing until I got to the next district, collecting more stuff along the way. Tried opening inventory and activating again. Could not find game code. Shrugged and continued playing until I died.

It would actually help if someone who has problems would allow me to let me take a look at it via Teamviewer. Apart of the steps it might also be that the created code is different, for any reason, which I will never know when starring at my code.
