Don't talk with a character.
If the game was not an rpg, the solution would be obvious but, talk with a character is the principal part of the game.
So, after some tests, i found that the option that causes the problem is "Unlimited Reckoning".

Verbatim cut-and-paste from the trainer read me file referencing U/L Reckoning..
Numpad 4: Unlimited Reckoning - press this key while in Reckoning mode to enable it to be on indefinitely. It's best to turn this back OFF when not engaging enemies or not needed.
Wait, there's a read-me?
Yeah, it's a .txt file that downloads with the trainer. BUT, and this is where it gets tricky, you have to know the secret keystroke combo to unlock the folder that the .txt file is in. The file is in a hidden folder which you unhide by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Down Arrow. Alternately you can try...Left Alt+Left Shift+PrintScreen (this may only work on newer versions of Windows).
