Progress report, and Why You Should Care!
Right now, as of Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014, we're at 2300 points of the required 3500. That means we're about 66% of the way there! Great job everyone, keep the push going!A quick note about pricing of the game: It is available on Steam for $15. That may seem like a lot, but the reasoning is simple and has everything to do with how it will perform under sales. After its inclusion in a recent Bundle as the $10 top prize unlock, more and more people own this game - and its inclusion IN that bundle makes it an absolute certainty that its price will be slashed tremendously during future Steam sales, with a 75% discount (not at all uncommon for this type of indie title priced in its bracket) meaning
$3.75).
What is Tower Of Guns? Its web site can be found here:
Link, and it is a labor of love that combines twitch FPS mechanics that should feel at home to any veteran of the Quake or Unreal Tournament series games, tactical FPS mechanics that add some "bullet hell" SHMUP strategy along with some R-Type aimed gun strategy (in other words, sometimes you're swarmed and you find the elegant way through; sometimes you make the enemies shoot where you aren't going to be, and this can and does all happen in the same rooms!), and cleverly implemented roguelike mechanics, including a very sneaky type of character creation that determines starting stats and everything.
Tower of Guns does not have character creation like most roguelike games' character creation - in most traditional RL games, you pick a class and a race or something like that, then off you go into the dungeon... Here, you pick a gun and a perk, and off you go into the tower! You unlock more guns and more perks as you go, with their requirements to unlock listed clearly beside them on the starting page (one of the most useful guns just requires that you croak three times - you'll nab that one VERY fast) and inside the Tower itself you can find fortunate or detrimental items or effects that change the mechanics of a given playthrough quite a lot. But don't worry, you'll have pleeeeenty of playthroughs.
Dying repeatedly is part of the charm of any good roguelike, and in this case, it's never some stupid BS that you have to just memorize or you're boned - no turning to stone because you chomped on the wrong corpse or anything like that. Instead, the extremely tight shooter mechanics dominate the gameplay once you're inside the tower. You won't find a moment's rest until you've cleared a room, and only then do you decide (if you happen to have enough coin saved up, helpfully dropped along with experience for your player character, experience for your gun, and health restoration packs by the many, many enemies in the tower) to buy something, assuming anything is for sale. Since it's all randomized, expect to adapt your strategies as you go, but since there are only so many types of rooms and enemy combos to pick from, no death should be wasted - use every opportunity to learn about the enemies you're facing, the guns you're using, the bosses that probably finally did you in, etc., and you'll go from helpless newbie to well-armed warrior over time!
Because of its status as a bundle/sale darling style game and its pricing as such, I predict MANY CheatHappens members who like FPS games and don't want to have to invest a few hours into a given playthrough will see the opportunity to pick up this game in the very near future for a nice, low price. And when you do, I think you'll want to have an Add Gun XP and Add Character XP cheat. I think you'll really want an Infinite Health option, because sometimes, that tower gets nasty indeed, and not everyone will have the time or patience to feed into this excellent game. I can tell you from experience that there have been times when I sure as heck wanted a "cheatfactor" to add to the general fun-factor of Tower of Guns.
So, help us push past 66% to the full goal, and you too can benefit from what I'm sure will be an exceptional trainer for an exceptional game. The only game remotely close in genre is Paranautical Adventures, and it sure benefits from its trainer - even though it doesn't have the character or weapon progression elements of this game.
Thanks for your time - we can do it , together, and may all who contribute reap the reward!
