This might seem retarded but you have to patch your game to 1.02 in order for the game to work.
Thing is you have to do this MANUALLY. Origin will not keep this game up to date for you so if you've just installed and are wondering why the game is constantly crashing open up the config utility and check your version.
If it's 1.00 you need to goto:
social.bioware.com/page/me2-patches
Download the patch and install it, one finished the Steam trainer should work.
I know this shouldn't need its own forum topic, but I think a lot of people (myself included) just assume that when they download and install the game from steam/origin/wherever it will be the latest version so they don't even bother to check.

I have version 1.02 of ME2. The issue is the executable I believe. In my task manager when I run it, the executable is listed as ME2Game.exe instead of MassEffect2.exe or something similar. I believe THAT is the bottleneck. If I knew how to send a copy of my executable into CheatHappens I would gladly copy and attach it to an email.
