would it be possible to get an option for more mercenaries available for recruiting? I like having fodder armies of foreign troops to take care of my far off conquests, but it takes too long to muster them. an option in the trainer would be great, or even if someone just has a file edit/mod I can do

There doesn't seem to be a straight forward answer at this point. I know what tables need editing but it requires testing with all sorts of numbers to find a consistent and desired result.
Radious campaign mod is supposed to increase mercs but I haven't seen an increase myself.

would be nice to find a mod with this in it, no luck yet. Don't know about yourselves but my mercs tend to hit the enemy first and bear the brunt of assaults, followed by my craic roman legions. I think I've mercs from all across Europe and into Syria. Makes for one hell of an army composition.

no way. when used properly mercs can be extremely effective. they can fill critical roles that some factions are less effective at (like egyptian elephants in a roman army, or hoplites supporting barbarian factions that may otherwise not do well against certain forces.)
i personally like building historically accurate armies which are not always the "best" but are usually more fun to command. romans were pretty famous for using mercenary and auxillery forces in their more remote campaigns, and northern barbarian forces were usually coalitions of small warbands. mercs are much better for simulating the diversity of these than the built in auxillery.
Also no challenge or fun in just making 20 eagle cohorts and watching them dominate everything in a mosh pit, so i only use the trainer for movement (when my army takes the wrong route and wastes their whole march) and occasionally to bump up a general after losing one to some retarded natural cause. but i would totally use a merc option

Yep! I prefer Merc Archers - I played the Spartan faction and I recruited Cretan Merc Archers and Syrian Merc Archers and they have high stats specially under a general that has ancillaries that affects infantry units and archery damage and range. I found out that my merc archers had far greater damage and shoot a lot faster than my Spartan archers under a general whose rating is 10 and has the "right" ancillaries. So don't think that all the Merc units are useless.
