it seems to be abit unstable. i change resolution and it creates a fatal error.. anyone else getting this on the steam edition?
Since there are people who give me crap for my grammar and is to lazy to check my profile I will say it here as well. I am dyslexic so give me a break as I *TRY* to spell correctly.

Just a shot in the dark here, but are you using IE 11 or higher as your Internet Browser? Not sure if this is the issue but with COH's I was having resolution issues because of the latest IE update, and I kept getting a black screen. I removed the updates from my update history page for Windows 7 and it fixed the issue. Like I said I am not sure if this is the issue, but it never hurts to try everything and anything sometimes.
Good Luck

Sorry for typing in this old topic, but in case more people have trouble starting this game, I was thinking to share how I got AoE 3 to work.
It worked for me on steam, and also for my old AoE 3 copy.
I make a shortcut on my desktop, right click it and go to properties. Then i go to the compatibility tab, and check the box to run it in compatibility for Windows XP (Service Pack 3). Then I also check the boxes for:
-Disable Display Scaling On High DPI Settings
-Run as administrator
I haven't experienced a single crash on this game since, so hope this works for as many as possible with these problems.
Also, the regular steam shortcuts won't have a compatibility tab. So go to your steam folder, wich is usually:
C:\program files (x86)\steam\
Your path might be different, but if you changed the path I am presuming you know how to get there!
From here you want to go into:
steamapps\common\Age of Empires 3\bin\
Here is your exe, age3.exe. Mark it, hold the right mouse button on it and drag it to your desktop and release, then hit create shortcut on the dropdown menu that shows up. On this shortcut just follow the first instructions and voilá!
