I'm teaching a composition course
-
First class was yesterday.
I gave the kids a paper to write the first day, but it's a trap.
I'm not grading it. But rather it will be kept in reference and all subsequent grades will be relative to the work on this initial paper.
Three pages, double spaced, on why they chose this university.
Papers are due tomorrow.
I am looking forward to seeing who understands the amazing opportunity I am giving them.
If they write a terrible paper on purpose, they can coast through the class.
THOSE are the intelligent ones.

So you're punishing those who are excellent writers by expecting them to improve on perfection?

So if they write a terrible paper they can "coast" through the class 😵
How is that teaching them to excel or get better at what they do? Sounds like you are rewarding mediocrity.
EA is the anti-Midas touch company. Everything they touch turns to garbage.

Sounds like a lot of dumb kids (like me) and sneaky bastards (also like me) are gonna get As in this class.
