I did not play Wing Commander, but i liked Freelancer Galaxy on Fire 2 is about to come out and it seems to be close resemblance to Freelancer. If you liked Freelancer, then a Darkstar One is also a good choice.
ps: Just had a crash. On steam forums users rage because it is a buggy game

Yup its a mess sort of, some mission which suppose to show a waypoint, shows it allright, a very small green circle, as soon as you do a next turn its gone, never to show again, seems as soon as you "step" outside the tutorial, things go wrong.
The game is in Beta stage, there is no arguing about that. But to actually compare it wit SoSE? A 4X game with a RTS? I agree that the notion in the trailer was funny, but don`t give into it. I am more inclined to compare to compare it with Endless Space, as I already see differences in the game mechanics.
Aye, but the hint in the marketing, towards SoaSE, is so obvious it basically slaps you in the face. (Really now, what the bloody hell would the game's creators mean by "Forget your sins..." otherwise? In a 4X games with multiple, very different, races, with different backgrounds?) And if you generalize a bit (there aren't a lot of space strategy games these days, even less so "real" 4X ones) to include space strategy of both the turn-based and real-time variety they're in the same ballpark.
But I agree - they're not really very comparable in other regards. It'd be like throwing Homeworld into the mix as well. Still, generalizing to the point of "space strategy" - SoaSE is miles ahead of this one in terms of general quality. Even Endless Space - which isn't the best game around - beats it by quite a long distance.
