I've fought in many wars but for some reason I can't seem to keep the territories I capture and hold even with 100% rate on the war. I'm probably just doing something wrong but the tutorial didn't actually help me all that much, so can someone here tell me what I did wrong?

Yeah, it's a little weird. I -did- end up winning some territory though after scouring the net a bit, I coersced relatives of that neutral kingdom into coming to my court and then gave that relative of the leader some land in my country, I win the war and can claim that one spot of territory that I declared as mine. There -has- to be a better way than winning one little sector per war.

You need to have a claim on a bigger "sector". If you only have a claim for a small "sector", you can only press that in wars.

The way to get claims for bigger "sectors" (Duchies, Kingdoms, Empires) it's usually only through family. Get you or your heir to have a marriage relation with someone related to said Duke, King or Emperor, or with the Duke, King or Emperor himself.

The game is based around that because in this period of time you couldn't go around declaring war like you pleased, you needed a valid reason, Holy War, Birthright, Law right (Which you can get by sending your Chancellor, the first one on your Council tab).

It's a really weird system. I followed your advice and had my daughter marry the King of Scotland (I'm the King of England and REALLY want Scotland, it's the last territories I'm missing there.) They had a daughter which is the heir to Scotland (age 0 or 1 at the time) but I couldn't declare war to conquer Scotland?

Well, your daughter, since is of lower rank than the husband, will leave to HIS country, instead of yours, so any sons will be to his country as well, it has to be in yours.

To check if they have a claim click on their portrait, but they do need to be in your country, your daughters son isn't.

Also don't think it's a weird system just more realistic than some people find entertaining in a video game (yes, again that's how it worked during that period).

I have one more question. How does matrilineal marriages come into play in conquering other countries? I also have a hard time getting others to agree to these.

Well... If you have your mother matrilineally marriage a ruler, her son should have you as his heir before he has his first son. Murder him while that is the case.
