Yes, it's a game mechanic. First 10 years of the new leader has quite disloyal vassals. After 10 years things improve.

If my memory serves me right from previous paradox games you can edit all of the main skills, traits and even birth dates of characters in the "\Crusader Kings II\history\characters\" folder. If you want fast research just play with those and voila. Also the savegame is just as editable. Notepad++ works best for editing them.

I remember in the original Crusader Kings I made myself my own dynasty and my own custom starting duchy.
