In over your head? No, not really. Unless you never played a single RPG before.

Shouts are unique to Skyrim, only the story takes from the previous games a little bit in terms of lore, but you do not need to play the previous Elder Scrolls games to enjoy Skyrim.

If you need help with something or don't know how something works, then by all means ask. :P

Just don't forget that Skyrim is essentially a free-roam game. Your quests will be the same as ours, but you will, as an example, find completely different items in chests.

If you really want to enjoy this game do all the misc. quests before venturing foward in the main game. I have leveled so much just on the misc. quests. Make sure you get to the College of Winterhold a.s.a.p because all the spell trainers are there. If you never played Elder scroll games, every time you level up you can find a trainer to train you on a skill that they know. You can get 5 skill points trained per level. Trick is you need to get them before you level up again or the rest are lost. The college has all the spell trainers so you would benefit getting to that place early. Your other skills will level up faster with combat so stick to the magic spells if you are heavy into magic. Level 47 and still haven't done any Brotherhood quests or thieves guild quests. Only quest I finished was the mage quest, but I am still working on getting books for the orc there. Get a house and hang on to all the dragon stuff you get when you slay a dragon, makes for dragon armor which is fantastic.

If you can't say it face to face, don't say it here!!

going on from above if you do the main story first it will be a million times easier as game scales difficulty as you level. so when you hit level 30 game gets more challenging and level 50 can be near impossible if you still getting the hang of mechanics.

depending what type of character depends what you may want to do first. if you into light armor and making money fast/exploring i recomend doing thieves guild and dark brotherhood as you will level very quick and stat well between the 2

magic characters need to go to all jarls and learn magic off the trainers then do the college quests/side quests. main magic story is small and kinda a disapointment if you have played other elder scrolls but its so useful to make magic better (magic is not same as shout btw no way to make them better other than learn 3 shout words)

for a mellee hack and slash hero just go out and kill. learn some smithing for gear and later on join companions so you can level up your armor and have skill teachers. story line also helps melle alot with certain people later into it.

all in all elder scrolls games are never to hard and are amatter of play how you like in them. sometimes i get so bored i make a new toon with no cheats just so i can explore the wild doing my own thing before a random animal kills me
