I can only understand half of what is being said by some npc's, like the Greybeards. I'm supposed to shout and sprint, but I don't sprint. I don't know if something was said that would help me. There really needs to be text with the voices so we can check what is said.

I had a similar issue with sound, and i found its better to play with headphones to hear the voice, also try lowering the in game fx in option such as music and environment whilst turning voice to maximum and also in the game option you have the option to turn subtitles on or off aka the text when speaking hope this helps/.
all the best

Yeah sound levels do seem to suck in this. I had everything maxed and my speaker system way past its usual level meaning 2x. I thought it might be something to do with my system. Maybe this is the first glitch al have with this game.

I did do all of that to improve voice sound. Now I'm finding I just can't do the shout/sprint. I just shout and stand there. And the npc keeps asking me if it's my best effort. I give up. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

This area when doing the shouts also annoyed me. The sound for me is perfect and I don't have problems with hearing what people are saying, though I just couldn't get the timing or two concurrent shouts correct.
This is what I did during this area: 1. When asked to "feel" the shout by the main grey guy, I first waited a bit after the asked. I noticed when I first did it I either was not close enough or shouted too quickly, and then for some reason my shout was finished for the day. So I made sure he had asked for the demo and I was up close to him.
2. When I had to do two shouts, it kept on only doing one, as I didn't know how to do two concurrently. So I would press the z key and then almost at the same time, press one of my mouse keys. This then activated both shouts after one another.
3. When outside the run fast one seemed to be find, I just pressed the key when the game opened.

i know the part u are on, the bit where u need to use the shout to spring forward before the gate closes. To make it clear make sure u have actually selected and equipped the correct shout, because i got stuck not realising that i still had the push one equipped, you need to have the whirlwind one then hold down Z u don't actually need to sprint @ all the shout will get u through the gate.
if this is what u mean please tell me if it helped, if not then please explain further and give exact detail about which quest your on so i can help you further

What worked for me, because I don't understand equip I guess, I listed the shout as favorite and gave it a keyboard number. Pressing z plus the number gave me the shout.

To fix a lot of the voice issues, you must change your sound settings. Go to Control Panel, select "Sound", select(highlight) "Speakers", click the "Configure" button in lower left of window, choose "Stereo"
This is what fixed them for me. If your soundcard has an app(Like Realtek HD Audio Manager), you may have to do there (as I did/had to). The goal is to get rid of the 5.1/7.1 surround sound setting and change to the two speaker setting.
After I did this, the voices were loud and clear...except Esbern
