i only bought this game the other day and i'm still on the prologue, so i'm wondering if i buy a dlc download for the ripper how soon I'll be able to use it? Will i have it straight away while i'm playing the prologue or do i have to wait till i get to a certain point in the game when i'm allowed to use weapons?

Well in the prologue you can't use weapons at all, but during Act I you should be able to use weapons.

Not sure if the Ripper will be in your inventory or not, but there aren't any special methods mentioned to getting it, so I guess it's pretty straightforward.

ok, i'll just go ahead and try it i guess, one other question, how do i know which version i have?
