Got the same problem as you.. I think its some bug with the save game. I read it happens mostly in multiplayer games (Someone joins you or you or vice versa). But neway I manage to fix my broken save file i followed the instruction on the steam forum...have to hex edit your save file though but worked like a charm.... Only draw back is i have to do all the previous quest again but all the items and character are intact.

Got this from a guy named KNR in steam forums Big thanks to him..


1) Extract the save from the save_0.sav through winrar or similar.
2) Open the save_0 file in a hex editor.
3) Go near end of file and locate:

00 -> to end of file

4) Replace this part of file starting from 18 to end of file with correct section from new, non broken save.
5) Save file
6) Archive using gzip
7) Play
8) Drop different types of junk from inventory to decrease savefile size
9) Exit game
10) Check if uncompressed file size is below 1260
11) Play

The game save crashing issue is what got me into modding this game. Now i dont have to worry. If my game ever crashes, i can just continue by choosing chapter select, and get back all the items i had before in just a few mins. It starts with all the main quests done up to that point, and all collectables too.

I do however still use gamesavebackup utility to create regular backups, just incase.

i wonder if it's because of all the stuff you put in jinn's inventory?
With 99 of everything, it adds up fast.

Can someone help me with an issue. My dead island crashes at Chapter 14 when I’m with the Zulu guy going in to his villas an the zombies attacks us.

Got the same problem. Took out tweaked game files, still hangs...
