thank you for all your tips. i will certainly look into them and report anything interesting back so that other people may make use of it. as it turned out, it had nothing to do with the trainers, but just happened to reveal itself while using one.

update: i think i have found a (possible, probable) cause to to the problem, and it is something completely unexpected: the headset mike!
apparently it is automatically set on by windows and somehow it interferes with the wireless keyboard/mouse combo. i had noticed some erratic behavior of the mouse while browsing the internet before, but i had not made the connection with our problem here. but when i thought about it i searched the web over the subject of cursor moving by itself and i found this information about microphones, speech recognition... that somehow can influence mouse behavior. in our case it was the keyboard that was influenced, but hey, they are both linked to the same switch!
