From what I can tell, most (not all) reviews and complaints of the game involve "this wasn't worth waiting 12 years for" and the expectations which come with that. Well... no game is worth waiting 12 years for. The game wasn't actually in development for the whole 12 years.
Try playing it as just another generic shooter (yes, I'm looking at you CoD) rather than something you've been expecting for so long and you may find it far more enjoyable.
Not even SCII was a game worth the 10 year wait, but played as another RTS in the SC series, minus the hype and hopes, it was quite playable.
my sentiments exactly. most people complaining r doing so because of the whole weight of expectation(12 years..oh my!). that just isn't fair..sure the game's short...but as DABhand said...Duke Nukem games were never meant to be graphical master-pieces(so many graphically awesome games have been utter trash). its a lot like Bullet Storm only less prettier...off-the-cuff adult entertainment. games r supposed to entertain( although the meaning of entertainment does differ from person to person)...don't be a critic...be a gamer. it is quite playable.

ALA-****ING-LUYA someone who finally gets it with games. i agree 100% its an enjoyable game on its own rights so people should stop *****ing about it and just play.
after all we all know what happens to whinners around the duke *wink*
Another thing people don't realise although it was initially unveiled 12-13 years ago, the development time has not been 12-13 years. It was close to development way back before it was dropped, and has been picked up by other developers.
One developer took the risk and updated the engine a bit and released it, again it wasn't supposed to be the next amazing looking next gen engine game, it was to be what it was supposed to be tongue in cheek toilet humoured shoot em up.
And on that front, they did one hell of a job. Completed it for the first time without the trainer on the hard difficulty, and i have to say i thoroughly enjoyed it, excuse me for not giving a that it's been advertised since 1998.
Hell.. I'm glad it came out now, and not back then. Very worth my £30, and now I'm off to cheat my way through it at double speed and with big head mode enabled, on the hardest difficulty
in my opinion its the modern day gamers that have a problem with duke. i grew up on the old sega system so i missed alot of duke except for 3d which really wasn't a game for my childhood in hindsight. meh.
the thing is peopel expect a top of the line graphic game with a story like CoD, mass effect or oblivion. and yeah compared to a big name game its a dissapointment.
however duke was and always is a simple by the by game that takes all of lifes problems and takes it way to far poking fun at itself in the process. duke was never ment to be taken seriously.
i payed to get a nice light game i did not have to think on and get some lols along the way and duke has more than delivered on that. multiplayer is alot more intese than i thought but i works for it just do no expect any serious multiplayer teams.
best way for me to think of it is with all the sonic games lately if someone remade one int he style of the old sidescroller run and jump even from other angles and added more to it i would know exactly what it is and respect what its doing. same thing with duke. duke is showing that the old retro games are not a thing of the past they are the core of any true gamer and really did define the golden age of games for a lack of a better term.
agreed, modern gamers are like spoiled children expecting all new games to be flashy in HD, with deep character and plot development and realistic game physics and start throwing a temper tantrum when it isn't, sure this game is flawed, but its been in development for nearly a decade and a half and changed developer hands half a dozen times or more, is it realistic to expect consistency in a game after that. And sure the gameplays inconsistant, but it's like a mashup of a bunch of excellent gameplays that work well together in DNF.
