Any way to get this game out of retired status? the trainer just closes when you try to open it. the latest java version is 1.15.1

According to the post about unretiring, the trainer is never coming back which is a shame.
Cypher was replying generally to a question about unretiring a game, pointing the member to where that's done when possible.
But you're correct, Minecraft is now permanently retired and not eligible for unretirement voting.

Given that this is a game still widely played, would it not be possible to allow it a special dispensation to give the trainer one last lease of life please?

Not when it was permanently retired, sorry. Probably find somthing on www.minecraftmods.com/
