@DABhand;
I'm not going to quote you altogether,, but it was a big surprise to many in the industry, that over the past two fiscal years, PC gaming had huge gains, especially in 2010. It even, by percentages of course, beat out the console sales. PC gaming isn't going away, though it isn't what it used to be for sure. Consoles have always sold more than PC games since the days of NES, that's a fact, if going by actual purchases.
Individual game sales are actually higher than they have ever been for PC, but only a few scant sources reports on this as MS and Sony release their data to NPC and various other reporting groups for their platforms. PC games have now been sold through various methods and it is interesting that it isn't listed as as much. It is known that, for example DA:O sold well over a million on PC, or that on release, ME2 sold more than a million its first month on PC, that's serious money.
As long as the market will allow for profits, PC gaming is going to be around and in force. Go look at Nvidia's and ATI sales number over the years and you'll see an increase. Those increases are not simply due to them releasing hardware as fast as possible because there are those who "just have to have it". It is because the gaming market is still there and has started growing again as the gamers are also buying again. I can barely remember when in this latest gen of vid cards, that they were so hard to get when first let out into the market. Last time I saw that happen like this was about 7 years ago.
Finally, PC gaming is not only the better platform, it is also the biggest market for gaming period, as there are more than 5 to 1 PCs in use than there are consoles total. PC gaming isn't just about RPGs or shooters. Indie games (Torchlight, Amnesia: TDD, etc) are selling bigger thane ver. Though I never play them, the casual market on PC is so huge that it make the console market pale in comparison (note that over 200mil people play Farmville, that's where the real money is). On a side note, I absolutely love console gaming, it has just gotten stale the past years as everything now wants to be Modern Warfare and everybody is copying the success. The games you gave as an examples, never work well on PCs. I cannot see Bayonetta, which I absolutely loved, on a rig, it is too hard so using those games as analogies will skew your facts. Throw in Modern Warfare and shooters that play on rigs, and you'll get a different viewpoint, than listing those that work on console more than they would on PC..
But Halo was on PC by the way.
