I am at the point where u have to follow Reznov armed only with a small axe and u have to keep out of the lights and the choppers spot light but I only last about 20 seconds where am I going wrong as this is really hacking me off

Step where he steps, go where he goes. Do not wander off on your own route. Follow Reznov. You will get to a point where you have melee a guard, once achieved you will pick up his gun and it's weapons free then.
