If you haven't played Fallout 3 yet, I would get that long before I would Vegas. The GOTY edition is huge and most bugs would be fixed with that version, and it is very cheap.. Vegas gameplay is very much like Fallout 3. I personally thought the storyline in Vegas was weak, but that is my opinion and the game is chock full of bugs with a multitude of those experiencing that, even admitted by Bethesda and the developer. But YMMV as some have not had many issues with it. The second patch released for PC anyway, seems to have fixed a lot, but there are still some issues.. Also, you have to have Steam to be able to play it. If you have played Fallout 3 already, then this game will be very familiar, in gameplay; the story though is very similar to the first two Fallouts.
Thanks very much i will take your advice Tommy, i'll buy the fallout3 and start from there. RPG you say.. now thats my kinda game. im a HUGE! world of warcrafter. got alot of quality 80 raiders. so definatly going to enjoy the fallout games. thanks alot for your info guys.
Just be sure to get the GOTY edition as the included Broken Steel add-on increases the level cap, and also allows for the game to continue on after finishing the main quest. It also adds 4 uber powerful creatures to the game that are a terrors to kill and are deadly to take on. It's an apocalyptic chaotic scene for real. You'll be blown away when you go outside for the first time.

Yeah the FO3GOTYE has all the DLC's here its like £15 now. I love FO3 to and the DLC's. It was defo good fun. I know this will sound strange but if you can get your paws on FO1 FO2 FOT play them as well it will give you more into the Fallout world than just playing FO3.
Yeah am a FO Die Hard Fan.
If you are a fan of The original Fallout and Fallout 2, skip Fallout 3 and get Fallout: New Vegas. While Fallout 3 is a great FPS and a fun game, it does not have the "feel" of the original two games. Two of the original team were involved in making New Vegas and it shows.
Now I just need to find the Super mutant to arm wrestle and get my ballgag.
I agree to an extent. Yes, Vegas is more like the first two, but if he did play them, he may feel like it is too similar. I lost interest in it mainly because of that since Vegas has little originality and is more of the same. I was hoping for something different from 1,2 and 3, aside from being a buggy mess for the majority, though they seem to have fixed some of it.
One thing that carried over from that team is poor QA as was the same with 1 and 2. Fallout 3 was original in that you didn't have to join or become part of a faction per se, you did what you did and the consequences were reflected. The GOTY edition will allow him to play out other quests when the main quest is finished, since Broken Steel allows for that as well as more leveling. Also, the main quest is more straight forward in 3, and the side quest are not tied to the main quest-line, like they are in Vegas. Some of those side quests in Vegas can fail if certain choices are made. Vegas recycled all of the perks from 3 as well as some of music from 1,2 and 3, that's certainly unoriginal IMO. Like I said, I got bored of it once I felt it was the same. If I wanted to play F1 and 2 again, I just would have.
If the OP has never played any of the Fallouts, he would be best to get 3 first since it is very straight forward. The GOTY edition will make the game a treat as Vegas has a while before DLCs come out, as well as having bugs fixed in the GOTY edition. It also can be bought for less than $30 now with all of that content. Then, if and when he would decide to get Vegas, his experience more than likely won't be so similar after playing 3.
