He entered the Imperial Academy, then defected to the Rebels when he saw what the Emperor truly was: a biased, alien-hating misogynist dinosaur. He was later captured by Isard and handed over to Thrawn, who convinced him that there was a threat outside the galaxy far more dangerous and important to the Imperials and Rebels than anything that had ever appeared before. So that's why he stuck with Thrawn.
