So I decided to fix him up and now he is the most annoying thing in the game when he starts playing that music each time he get's in attack mode. Is there any way to shut him up?

I like ED-E and his cowboy high-noon jingles to be honest. It's only annoying when enemies enter and then exit his sight range rapidly and he repeats the Enter and Exit combat jingles every time, but that doesn't happen very often when he's set to passive.
Annoying followers are Boone (When doing the Fiend Bounties quest where you have to keep the target's heads intact and attached for the best outcome), or Raul's comments whenever you enter sneak.
And oddly enough, every time I fire and it doesn't hit an enemy, both Boone and Raul make comments as if I was accidentally shooting them.
Boone says things like "Let me aim that for you next time" and "What's your problem?", and Raul says things like "Hey boss, I might be ugly, but I'm still on your side."
It's annoying as hell really...
Yo.

I think I will drop ED-E back where I got him and come back way later to finish his quest.

Yeah I find Boone's "Let me aim that for you next time" rather funny. I like sniping enemies from afar before they come into Boone's range. I can score a sneak critical for a kill and Boone still wants to help me aim.
The combo of ED-E and Boone is great for sniping. Boone's perk of making the enemies glow really lights up far away enemies esp at night. And ED-E's perk of showing the red markers early alerts you to them well before they're in range.
Only problem I have now is that ED-E's messed up after his upgrade. I sent him for the weapons upgrade (instead of the armor) and when he came back he won't fire at anything, and most of the time he won't even follow me around. He'll spawn with my char and Boone when we move through zones, but then he just stays there. Apparently it's a bug. For now if you're going to do ED-E's quest I'd suggest going for the armor upgrade instead

My problem with ED-E is that I he is always in aggressive mode even when I set him to passive which always gets me detected because he starts running after everybody.

ED-E is really cute and cool, but all companions do annoying things like that. Sometimes I'll just fire at say..a barrel, or a building for the hell of it and Veronica will pipe in saying something like, "Do I have to take that away from you?" like I shot her, so I know what the above guy was saying. It's something odd about the companions.
To be honest though, I think I like having Rex the cyber dog in my team more, he's so cool with the brain dome.
