This causes my game to crash whenever I enter a battle. The new STEAM version doesn't work.

Well, we give up then. STEAM version nuked. We'll try again with next patch.
Actually, we're just going to retire the game. After 32 patches and having to support two totally different versions every time, we're officially DONE. Maybe next time the programmers will actually FINISH the game before they release it.
