he is something of a sterotype perpetuated by the godfather moveis, i noticed that too.

I don't think he is a stereotype but to many elements of his character seem to be derived from The Godfather.
Aside from how and why he winds up in the war which was cleever I like how Vito is motivated to become a career criminal based on his fathers debt to the loan shark.

it is kind've stereotypical that he's italian, like that's the first thing that people think of when the term gangster comes up.
Also, the calousness of vito's character is a little off, like he never regrets doing these things or remorseful in any way, i think the writers should've done more in the way of character development, still, it's not bad the way it is.

First I see what you're saying about Vito being a streotype but 2K for good or for bad is giving the public what they think they want. I mean look at the popularity of The Godfather. But how many people know about the movie Millers Crossing which focuses on two Irish gangsters?
I do agree the story could have benefited from more character development but if Vito showed to much regret or remorse then we might have fund ourselves as the audience questioning why he did what he did. Besides look at the enviorment and the kind of people that surrounded him, these people kept on telling what he was doing was perfectly acceptable and he came to beleive that.
One thing I would like to have seen is more of his blood family. But then that would have made the game so much longer.
