Nostalgia is a funny thing. Take the video game adaptation of Scott Pilgrim VS The World for example. Yes, it's a love letter to a video game era long gone, but at the same time - after playing it, I couldn't help but be thankful for what we have. Then...on the other hand, it's $10. If you've played through the 16-bit era and lived to tell about it, you're bound to get giddy with nostalgic glee, until it becomes abundantly clear what it's missing.
Scott Pilgrim VS The World follows the story of the comic and movie of the same name. As Scott, it's your quest to defeat the seven evil ex's of your new girlfriend Ramona Flowers. It's a quest filled with nostalgic charm, video game references and inside jokes, and if you're only familiar with the movie, you're bound to be a bit lost as the game goes into a bit of story that's only found in the comics (like familiar characters found in the background of scenes). These nods though never seem to get in the way of the gameplay as the story plays a minor role in the grand scheme of things.

Remember games like Final Fight, Battletoads and Double Dragon? Scott Pilgrim VS The World plays very similar to these games, you start on the left and punch and kick everything on your way to the right end of the screen. You'll start out weak and easy to kill, but as you play through the game you'll level up, earning new moves and abilities. The game is tons more fun when you can start taking out baddies with flying dropkicks and other cool maneuvers.
Scott Pilgrim VS The World is at its best when playing Co-Op with a buddy. Teaming up as an impressive list of characters makes it easier to take on bigger bad guys and level up, but it's at its worst when teaming up with more than one friend. The action in Scott Pilgrim VS The World can get pretty frantic, and things only get worse with more characters on the screen. The Co-op play is great, but there's also some questionable things missing. First, there's absolutely no online play. I understand that you're going for the whole nostalgia thing, but come on - if I'm playing Co-Op, I want the option to be able to link up with my PSN buddies. At least give me the option to drop in or out of a friend's game.

The best thing about Scott Pilgrim by far though is the small touches thrown in. If you look close enough, there are references to everything from Sonic the Hedgehog to Final Fantasy and everything in between. Half the fun of the game is exploring every corner and every shop to see just what the developers threw in. The game itself is only about four or five hours long but you can easily double that if you do a little exploring.
Scott Pilgrim VS The World is a retro treat that'll appeal to everyone who's experienced the 16-bit era, or anyone who's loved it. The constant nods and inside jokes are sure to keep any gamer satisfied long after completing its 4-5 hour campaign. Sure, there's no online play and it's missing some modern conveniences, but come on - it's only $10, what more could you want?

CHEATS USED: Zombie Mode, Blood Mode, Achievements List, Trophies List, more
There's been a lot of games that embrace the whole retro thing lately, and as good as they may be, a lot of them let me down for one simple reason; there's not enough cheats. Retro games should have cheats!
Scott Pilgrim VS The World is different though, the game is loaded with cheats. There's even a zombie cheat. A zombie cheat! How cool is that?
Oh, there's also some pretty useful cheats here, like unlocking extra characters, gaining extra weapons and the ability to turn all animals into coins (yes, that's a Sonic 3 reference.)
