CHEATfactor Game Review by: Joe Sinicki | Reviewed on: PC
Welcome to our CHEATfactor Game Review of Rocket League. We review the game and then factor in how the available cheats affect the overall game experience. For better or worse, our reviews will help you decide whether or not to use cheats when playing the game. Psyonix's Rocket League doesn't look like a game that you should pay a lot of attention to but rest assured it is. Oddly enough it feels like the perfect mix of fun and competition and ignores lines previously drawn between sports games and other genres. Most importantly it's the type of game that anyone can jump into and work to become better at. There's no pre-requisites here and Rocket League's brand of fun competition is the perfect brand of Saturday night fun with the right group of people (especially if you've had a few). |

It's full of a surprising amount of depth and strategy.
So just what is Rocket League? It's Soccer...but with cars. You've played games like Rocket League before, mostly in the form of mini games and cheap Steam releases but none are on the level of Psyonix's latest. It's full of a surprising amount of depth and strategy. Can you get lucky and be in the right place at the right time? Sure, but at it's heart Rocket League is a game that almost demands you learn it's ins and its outs if you want to continue to be successful, especially against real life players. The first thing you'll have to learn is easy but it's also essential - how to master the driving mechanics. The game is a constant mix of speed and momentum and balancing the two in conjunction with building a strategy can be tough but the key is mastering the special moves and building upon them. While most matches boil down to everyone just chasing after the ball wildly the most successful players are patient enough and know when to act. You'll start with basic moves like acceleration and bunny hopping and the key to the game is mixing the moves at the right time. This must be what real soccer players feel like in practice. It all may seem a bit overwhelming in print but the real joy of Rocket League is just how easy it is to get into a match. While all of the strategies above will make you better at the game it's completely possible to just jump in and have fun. The game is simple enough that anyone can get into a game and have fun without the wall of learning the in-depth strategies of the game. There's a very arcade like feel to Rocket League and the whole experience benefits greatly from it. |

Strategies aside, most matches come down to improv...
Strategies aside, most matches come down to improv and a player's ability to think on their feet. The ball has the weight of that of a beach ball and has the tendency to bounce around the map in incredibly unpredictable ways. I found in one match that my strategy was just to charge the ball and hope for the best. The first few times, it worked like a charm and I scored four goal back to back. After that? Not so much; the other team hit the ball just a second earlier and the ball went flying through the arena. It's this unpredictability that makes Rocket League so much fun. That being said though there's a real competition feeling to the game, especially when you're playing with or against a group of veterans. Play enough Rocket League and you'll be awarded the ability to customize your ride (or is it a player?). While some of these customization options are mere ascetic changes, there are those that actually help your performance and can make the difference towards the end of a game. This is where the game really starts to cater towards it's growing dedicated fanbase. Planning your upgrades is essential to next level Rocket Leaguing and as it becomes increasingly more complex, it also becomes increasingly more rewarding. Unquestionably though I had the most fun with Rocket League when I was playing with people I knew. It's the ultimate party game and it only get's better when you've had a few. Rocket League is a fun and enjoyable sports game that's easy to get into and lots of fun to learn to master. If you value your free time you may want to stay away since it's just so damn addicting. |
