=========================== Need for Speed: Underground PlayStation 2 =========================== FAQ / Walkthrough By CodyLoco V 0.74 - 07/04/04 ___________ _______________________________________________________________/ 0.00___/ /__General_____________________________________________________________/ ___________ \___0.10 \_________________________________________ \_________________________________Introduction___\ Need for Speed is one of the few game series that has fascinated me for as long as I can remember, so naturally any new NFS game that Electronic Arts releases deserves special attention from me. No other racing game has ever been able to give me that sense of speed and excitement I always experience while playing a NFS title, and Underground is far from an exception. However, this game is much unlike the other NFS titles. As EA said themselves, this is a completely different game from Hot Pursuit or High Stakes, so don’t expect bright, sunny closed tracks with exotic supercars... This is dark city street racing... This is Underground. ___________ \___0.20 \_________________________________________ \_____________________________Game Information___\ General ======= Name: Need For Speed: Underground Platform: PlayStation 2 (as well as PC, XB, NGC, and GBA) Publisher: Electronic Arts Developer: Black Box Release Date: November 17, 2003 (NA) November 21, 2003 (EU) December 25, 2003 (JP) Genre: Driving/Racing ESRB Rating: Everyone (E) Playability =========== Players: 2 Online: Network Adapter (Broadband Only) 2 - 4 Players Pedals/Steering Wheel: Yes Force Feedback: Yes USB Headset Chat: No USB Keyboard: No USB Mouse: No ___________ \___0.30 \_________________________________________ \________________________________Author's Note___\ Seeing as Need for Speed: Underground 2 is soon coming out, I have decided to update (finally) this FAQ once again now that I have something remotely similar to the otherwise known as 'free time'... The main difference from other games is the [SELECT] button which places your car in the middle of the road facing the way you are supposed to go, which is especially helpful after messing up. In this guide, [] means [SQUARE], /\ means [TRIANGLE], and ( ) means [CIRCLE] (obviously}. +L, +R, +U and +D mean D-Pad Left, Right, Up and Down in that order. _________________________________________ \ 1.11 \ Circuit, Dash, Knockouts / \________\___and Drift________________/ All these modes use the same buttons, as they are all normal races. Your car will always be Manual Transmission, so you DO have to shift whether you like it or not. For more information look at the Drag Racing (1.26) section below. The following will have descriptions on each race mode as well as strategies that people have sent in on how to master that particular mode. In most modes you will be racing against three other competitors, all with similar performing vehicles as yours, and in some races you also have to watch out for traffic. _________________________________________ \__1.21__\__Circuit_____________________/ Circuit races are the ones with the same start and finish line, ie, you race around a route and try to be the first person back to where everyone started. Most circuit races involve two laps around the track, although there are some really long six or seven lap races you will encounter towards the end of the game. You will usually want to save your Nitrous Oxide for the last lap in the final stretch to the finish line, or you could use it to get a head start at the beginning of the race and concentrate on staying ahead the whole time. _________________________________________ \__1.22__\__Dash________________________/ Dash races are similar to the Circuit races, however the object is to get from one part of the city to the other, and the starting line and finish line are in different places in the city. Obviously there won’t be more then one lap (or a lap at all for that matter), so make sure you use your Nitrous Oxide at some point during the first “lap”. _________________________________________ \__1.23__\__Lap Knock-out_______________/ Lap Knock-outs are basically Circuit races, however at the end of each lap the driver who is in last place gets eliminated. In Underground mode Lap Knock-outs are always three laps, so three drivers will be eliminated. The last lap is usually the most challenging, as it will be the best two drivers out of the original four racing one-on-one against each other. Since the last lap is usually the hardest, it’s recommended that you save your Nitrous Oxide until the end of the race. If you are having trouble with the last racer on the last lap, try knocking him out early in the race by slamming him into a wall or traffic. That should leave you with an easier opponent on the last lap. _________________________________________ \__1.24__\__Time Trials_________________/ Time Trials test your racing skills without the pressure of other racers being on your tail, all you have to watch out for is other traffic. You are given a preset time in which you have to Dash to a spot in a city, and the only way to beat this kind of a race is by beating the time they give you. Your remaining time in a Time Trial race is represented on the top-left section of the screen during a race. Usually, choosing easy will give you an extra ten seconds on the time, and choosing hard will take away some ten seconds from your allowed time. _________________________________________ \__1.25__\__Drift_______________________/ Drift mode comes easily to some people, but for others it is a visual representation of hell itself. Drifting is a new competition that has been adopted from Japan where the goal is to earn points by making your car slide across the track with style. ______________________________________________________ / Name | Style Pts Awarded | Points Required \ |------------------------------------------------------| | Good Drift +100 2000 | | Great Drift +150 5000 | | Superb! +500 | | Colossal! +1000 15000 | | Outrageous! +2000 25000 | | Insane! 50000 | | Drift King! +10000 100000 | \______________________________________________________/ - Deymus, GameFaqs Boards says: “Try to drift/slide in the bonus zone (area marked with white lines near the wall) as much as possible. It allows your points to increase at an extremely fast rate, especially if you've obtained enough points to have x5/maxxxed. Also, if your car is starting to go forward toward the wall, but your car is near the middle, use your hand-brake to turn your car and just hold the gas down. 9 times out of 10 you'll not only correct yourself (prevent yourself from hitting the wall), but you'll get a decent slide in the bonus zone. Of course this is also dependant on how fast you're going. Drifting cannot really be taught, though. Some people drift differently than others.” - Sakeido, GameFaqs Boards says: “FWD cars are a lot more balanced... e-brake drifts are easier to control but the cars have more difficulty keeping the speed up enough to chain together drifts through straight-aways. The AWD cars (Skyline, Impreza, Eclipse) are the best balance since the tail doesn't wildly wag around, but the Miata is very well balanced as well. The Supra is a beast of a car for drifting, it goes out of control very easy, and the RX-7 is also a good car but once you get to 90 degrees you are done for, it will spin. The 240 is a amazing drift car (just like real life)” _________________________________________ \__1.26__\__Drag Races__________________/ Drag Races are the ultimate test for your ride. These are all about shifting through your gears at the right time and hitting the NOS to smoke your opponents. For those of you few who don’t know what a Drag race is, it involves racing your car from one point to another (usually a quarter mile or a mile, in Underground it is a whole mile) down a relatively straight stretch to test a vehicle’s acceleration and speed against another. With higher performance cars (as the ones in NFSU), these races usually take less than 30 seconds and can reach speeds of over 300KM/H. Mastering this mode can be tough, especially when traffic starts to get in your way and the tracks force you to change lanes. The key to drag racing is shifting at the best time. The whole race is usually defined at the starting line. At the start of the race, rev your engine until the point where the needle turns green (there will also be a blue or green dot in the middle of your screen). You want to try and keep it there until the race starts. This can be really hard at first, but there are lots of ways to do it. You can either push the R3 stick up slightly, or use the X button (remember that it is pressure sensitive). Either way, as soon as you start moving (your car will shift into first automatically) make sure you floor the gas and get ready to shift into second gear. When shifting, you want to try to get perfect shifts, which happen when you shift while your tach needle is green. If you shift too early, you will get a “Short Shift” and it will take you longer to climb through that gear. Shifting in blue will give you a “Good Shift”, which is a little slower than green, and if it is red it means you over revved, and it will take a lot longer to make it through the next gear. If you don’t shift, your going to end up overheating your engine (you will see the heat meter go up and just before it blows you will feel the controller pulse) and loose the race. This mode is all about practice and mastering your car’s shifting pattern. Try turning up the volume on your TV and let the sound of your engine guide you through the gears. - Deymus, GameFaqs Boards says: “Get a perfect shift off the line when you start a drag race (tends to be around 6-7) and use nitrous to increase your shifting speed. Right after you shift gears, hit the nitrous button in steady bursts (don't burn it in a long shot) and make sure you get a perfect shift, then repeat until you hit last gear. If you're at the point where you have all level 2 performance mods, then you'd want to burn all your nitrous right after you shift into the last gear. But if you happen to have all level 3 performance mods, then you want to save it until near the end of the drag race as it's possible to blow your engine if you burn all your nitrous early on. Of course letting off the gas for a second will prevent that.” _________________________________________ \__1.27__\__Tournaments_________________/ Tournaments are where you earn the big money and respect in Underground. They are usually three or four races long, and can involve any race mode. Points are awarded at the end of each race reflecting your position: ______________________ / Position | Points \ |----------------------| | First 8 | | Second 6 | | Third 4 | | Fourth 2 | \______________________/ At the end of each race you have the option to restart the race or the whole tournament, so don’t worry if you find yourself on the last race and loose, you can just restart that run and keep your points from the previous races. _________________________________________ \__1.28__\__Split-Screen________________/ Split-screen is the normal two player head to head battle, and there won’t be any other competition. It is possible to use cars from two separate Underground profiles by having the second player press [] and load their profile. This is a great way to show off your ride at your friends house and have everyone wishing they owned it in real life... You can set most options for the race, like the track, whether you want traffic, how many laps (between one and ten), etc. You aren’t going to receive any style points for doing a split screen race though! _________________________________________ \__1.29__\__Free Run____________________/ Free run is just for practice. No other cars (except for traffic if you want to enable it) to get in your way, just flying around a track without any pressure. If you start to feel frustrated because of a race in Underground mode, it really helps to do a couple of laps in free run (that’s if you have the track unlocked) to de-stress yourself and master the track. You don’t have to set the amount of laps you want to do in this mode, just do as many as you want, and when your tired of the same thing, just hit [START] and exit. ___________ \___1.30 \_________________________________________ \_________________________________Style Points___\ Style Points are what give you access to most of the visual upgrades in the game. You earn style points for what you do while racing. Things like taking shortcuts, drafting behind another racer to gain a speed boost, or being able to do a whole lap without hitting anything will all count towards your total style points at the end of the race. Below it will say how many points you get for what you do. The table below describes what you get points for and how many. If it says +Var or –Var, it means you will earn or loose variable amounts of points depending on how good or bad you did whatever it was you did... I think I confused myself... O.o ______________________________________________________________________ / Style | Points | Description \ |----------------------------------------------------------------------| | Near Miss +100 You get this when you nearly hit traffic. | | Shortcut +100 The first time you take a shortcut. | | Head Start +100 Manage to start ahead of the pack (pull | | off a perfect shift!) | | Lead Lap +100 Be in first place when you finish a lap. | | Clean Section +50 Race a whole section (~ 1/4 Mile) w/o | | hitting anything. | | Clean Lap +200 Don’t hit anything for the whole lap. | | Clean Race +500 Don’t crash the whole race! At the end of a race, your total Style Points earned for that race will be multiplied by either 1X, 2X, 3X, 4X or 5X depending on your Rep Multiplier. Your Reputation depends on your car. The more visual upgrades you put on your cars and the more exotic and unique your car looks, the higher your reputation. Basically the higher the level of the upgrade you are installing the more Rep points you are going to get. ___________ _______________________________________________________________/ 2.00___/ /__Cars________________________________________________________________/ Here is the list of the cars that are available in the game. It shows whether the car is FWD (Front Wheel Drive), RWD (Rear Wheel Drive), or AWD (All Wheel Drive, which is like 4x4), as well as how many gears it has. As a general rule, FWD cars handle turns well but are hard to slide, while RWD cars are easy to spin out with and fishtail easily. AWD vehicles are usually a good balance between the two. The stats representing Acceleration (Acl), Top Speed (TSp) and Handling (Hdl) show the car’s abilities _without_ any performance upgrades. Stats with the | | around them represent highest stat. ___________ \___2.10 \_________________________________________ \_________________________________Initial Cars___\ After you beat the initiation challenge, you get $10000 to spend on a new ride. You have five to choose from at the beginning, of which are listed below in the chart. I would personally recommend the Mazda Miata MX-5 as your first car, simply because it has the best handling of all five. If you really need to be the fastest (its not all that much faster though) you can choose to take the Dodge Neon for a spin. ______________________________________________________________________ / Car | TRACT | Acl | TSp | Hdl | Cost \ |----------------------------------------------------------------------| | Volkswagen GOLF GTI FWD/6 0 0 2 $8000 | | Honda Civic RWD/6 |1| 1 3 $10000 | | Peugeot 206 FWD/5 |1| 1 3 $8500 | | Mazda Miata MX-5 RWD/5 |1| 1 |4| $9500 | | Dodge Neon FWD/6 |1| |2| 3 $8500 | \______________________________________________________________________/ ___________ \___2.20 \_________________________________________ \___________________________________Other Cars___\ Here are the other cars you can unlock by playing through Underground mode. Below is a list of the covers you can get. Note the last one... anyone beat ‘Racer-X’ yet? ______________________________________________________________________ / ## | Name | Description \ |----------------------------------------------------------------------| | 01 Modified Mag Ranked #10 in circuit | | 02 Sport Compact Car Ranked #9 in sprint | | 03 Chrom & Flammen Ranked #10 in drift | | 04 Turbo and High-Tech Ranked #7 in drag | | Performance | | 05 Import Tuner Ranked #8 in drift | | 06 Import Racer Ranked #8 in circuit | | 07 Super Street Ranked #6 in circuit | | 08 Sport Compact Car Ranked #6 in sprint | | 09 Import Tuner Ranked #4 in drift | | 10 Hot4s Win all tournaments | | 11 Stuff Win overall title | | 12 Autopress Install All Level 1 Performance Upgrades | | 13 Super Street Install All Level 2 Performance Upgrades | | 14 Maxi Tuning Install All Level 3 Performance Upgrades | | 15 Option Get a one star reputation | | 16 Elaborare Install All Level 1 Visual Upgrades | | 17 Super Street Install All Level 2 Visual Upgrades | | 18 Hot4s Install All Level 3 Visual Upgrades | | 19 DUB Install All 4 Unique Visual Upgrades and | | 9 other Level 3 Visual Upgrades | | 20 Turbo and High-Tech Beat the preset best time in any Drag | | Performance race on Hard mode | | 21 Import Racer Beat the preset best time in any Circuit | | race on Hard mode | | 22 Import Tuner Beat the preset best score in any Drift | | race on Hard mode | | 23 Sport Compact Car Beat the preset best time in any Sprint | | race on Hard mode | | 24 Import Tuner Acquire 500 online reputation | | 25 Hot4s Acquire 1000 online reputation | | 26 Elaborare Acquire 2500 online reputation | | 27 Import Tuner Acquire 5000 online reputation | | 28* Turbo and High-Tech Beat Racer-X... | | Performance | \______________________________________________________________________/ *Access this hidden cover by first selecting a cover from the top right column, then scrolling all the way down (hold +D) until you reach the bottom. It will highlight a blank space, but if you look at the description it will say ‘Beat Racer-X’. I am missing a couple of the magazine cover names, so if you could, please send those in! (Especially the online ones). ___________ _______________________________________________________________/ 6.00___/ /__Other_______________________________________________________________/ ___________ \___6.10 \_________________________________________ \__________________________________Cheat Codes___\ Here are all the cheats that I know of, so if you find any others please send them in. I personally don’t like to cheat (it takes the fun out of the game) unless I am completely done the game and am looking to extend its replay value. I’m not responsible for you using these cheats, so don’t try to blame me because you screwed yourself over, I already warned you! Also, please don’t cheat online. Not only does it prove that you are a looser, it also ruins the game for the rest of us. _________________________________________ \__6.11__\__Standard____________________/ Enter these codes at the main menu: Get Free Parts - Doesn’t Work X, X, /\, X. Getting pissed off at your game and throwing your controller against the wall isn’t going to make your car go any faster, instead its just going to cost you a new controller. If you start to get worked up because you can’t win go out side and chill out for a bit. You will find that when you come back you are going to do much better then you were doing before. + When you crash, don’t go straight to hitting [RESET] to get your car back on the track because you restart at a standstill, making you loose a lot of speed. If you can, see if you can recover from the crash (you can still control your car while in the slow-motion sequence) before resetting and you will probably get back on track faster then if you had reset. + Don’t be afraid to change cars for different race modes, for example, if you are using the Mazda Miata MX-5 for Circuit and Dash races, you might want to trade it in for something like the Mazda RX-7 when you are going to Drag as it is a faster car, then trade it back for the better handling Miata MX-5 when you are done. + If you are using manual transmission and you reset your car or just come to a complete stop for any reason, you will get a faster start if you slam it into neutral (L2), revv up the engine (X), and then when its redlined (or if you are good enough when its in perfect shift) put it into first gear (R2). The whole process should take less than a second to do. + The earlier races on underground mode are not as hard. Try the HARD setting for a few of these races, you still win and you get more money. From: No Name [TimothyVMurphy(at)aol.com] + Turn of the Jump Cam (the camera angle you get when you catch air) by going to OPTIONS, CAMERA and moving the Jump Cam slider all the way to the left. It will help you focus during a race and you won’t get distracted every time the angle changes. + Just a tip is all: If you're screaming down the road and a collision with another car is unavoidable, hit the NOS. The high speeds will often allow you to palm off the obstacle or even lever it over your ride, thereby avoiding a crash. A word of warning, this only works if you have one of the bigger cars, like the RX-7 or Toyota Supra; with hatchbacks this is suicide. From: SpyderBite [liamcollins(at)coolgoose.com] + Easy $6000: First, get a Skyline and put all the performance parts to stock. Don’t have to for the visuals. Once you have a stock Skyline, trade it for a VW Golf. Put all the performance parts back to level 3 and trade the Golf for a Skyline. You should make a profit of 6G’s! From: Toki [atticus(at)bigpond.com.au] Note: Could someone please confirm this for me? ~CodyLoco + Always install your drivetrain last (as it says in the description of the upgrade). This way you will end up with a faster acceleration and a higher top speed. ___________ \___6.40 \_________________________________________ \___________________Frequently Asked Questions___\ Q How can I color the vinyls on my car? A Just go to the screen where you select which layer of vinyl you want to change, then choose one of those layers and press []. Keep in mind that unique vinyls can’t be re-colored. Q What the (BLEEP!) is []?! A Come on guys, use your imagination... it’s square! Besides, its explained at the top. Q How do I access the tutorial videos for Drift and Drag modes? A On the main menu (not the Underground menu) choose Quick Race, then highlight either Drift or Drag mode and hit L2. Q Is there a replay mode? A Nope :( Q Is there any way to get all the unique upgrades or visuals in one profile? Like for example, I want to get both the Vapor and the Mantis wide body kits. A No you can’t. You might be able to with cheats but I don’t think so (I don’t have a GameShark). Q How do I get the Racer-X Magazine? A Like I said above in the magazines section, I don’t know... If you know the answer tell me. Q Why isn’t there even a rear-view mirror?! A There is! But its only available for bumper-cam view. To activate it, go to car options in the options menu, and set the view to ‘bumper-cam’. Then go to visual options and you will see the option for a rear view mirror. Q What is a ricer/riced car? A If you hear someone say ‘That car is really riced up!’, or ‘That car is just a ricer’, it usually means a car that has been tricked out visually, but it lacks the power and speed to make up for it. In other words, a ricer car is an all-show-and-no-go kind of car. A lot of people have emailed me regarding this topic, and it seems each person has their own dictionary entry on what a ricer/riced car means, so it is really up to you. Q What happened to car damage? A Most car manufacturers don’t like to allow games to show damage on their cars, however cars still get slightly damaged... The front windshield will crack and the side mirrors will sometimes get ripped off. Q Does choosing different manufacturers on performance upgrades change their performance? A No, it’s just for fun ;) Q When do I get to paint my bumpers? It shows a pic of it on one of the loading screens, but I've never figured out how to do it. A You don’t paint the actual bumpers, there is a body vinyl that covers the bumpers. From: Jerry Reed [jir896(at)comcast.net] Q After a drag race, I looked at the statistics and saw that someone had 5/7 perfect shifts... How is that possible if the most any car in the game has is 6 gears? A If you shift down and then up again it counts towards your shifts, try it, you can make your stats say 50/100 shifts if you wanted to (but why?). Q Can this be played over a 56k connection? A No, this is a broadband only game. There are ways to get around the restriction, but even if you do, it will VERY RARELY connect and you will lag yourself and everyone else if you do manage to make it into a race (and usually ends up disconnecting everyone as well). If you want to play this game online, ya gotta get broadband. Q I keep getting this DNAS –402 error when trying to connect, what’s going on? A Chances are you are using a copy of the game. Most PS2 games can only be played online with the original disks. Another problem could be that you have used cheats and then saved the game, as the DNAS is also a cheat blocking system. If you did save the game with cheats on, you will probably have to start a new profile to play online. "I had this error and it is caused by a corrupt data in your online registry. To fix it all anyone needs to do is rerun the disc that came with their network adaptor." From: Jared Clark [racer0069(at)hotmail.com] Q Can anyone playing an online game cheat? I played a few games, and SOME of them seemed TOO good to be legit. Can anyone put in a cheat code and cheat in an online game? I guess that's my only question...if you could explain how the cheating online thing works. Or if there's a way to race people who don't cheat. From: Micah [below_underground(at)hotmail.com] A Even though I don't have access to online mode, I know the answer to this question. Yeah people cheat online, but only with the PC version of the game. There have been a couple of trainers and patches that give people really fast acceleration or top speed or unlimited NOS, and obviously they use them online. As for the PS2 version, I haven't heard of anyone cheating with it yet, but it may be possible with a GameShark or something like that. However, keep in mind there are some people who are REALLY good racers, so be careful when you accuse someone about it. I heard EA was going to soon patch the PC version of NFSU to get rid of those cheaters, and currently bans any PS2 racers who decide to hack their memory. ___________ _______________________________________________________________/ 7.00___/ /__FAQ Info____________________________________________________________/ ___________ \___7.10 \_________________________________________ \________________________Contacting the Author___\ The only way to contact me is by email, which you can reach me at [codyloco (at) hotmail (dot) com].
