I aim to make this guide a complete guide to the game, covering everything from game options to team stats to starting rosters to Crib items. Everything a football gamer wants, probably more then they'll need. This guide was written mainly for the Xbox version of ESPN NFL 2K5, so all button commands and configurations are representative of the Xbox controller and game. While this guide will still help those of you playing on the PlayStation 2, just note that the commands and buttons will differ for you. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [2] Controls | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Just a quick note: Whenever I say "RIGHT ANALOG CLICK", it's not a typo; it means you click the right analog stick in as you would any other button. It allows you to get right into a game between two teams without needing to set anything up. When you enter Quick Game mode, you are told to choose between two teams. The team on the right will be the home team, and the team on the left will be the away team. When choosing your team, move the controller icon to the side of the screen for the team you choose. You can also choose between different uniforms by pressing the WHITE and BLACK buttons. If you can't decide on what team you want to be or play against, press the BLACK + WHITE buttons together to have the game pick a random team. While at this screen, you can choose to use a VIP profile by pressing UP or DOWN on the RIGHT ANALOG STICK. Press START to proceed. Here is where you configure the game options if you want to, the Coach Matchup. If you just want to hop into the game, choose "Start Game" to get going. On the left side of the screen is your options, which are explained below. On the right side of the screen is two bits of information. The left graphic shows the stats for the AWAY team. It has the name of the coach (or VIP if its you), the record of the coach (you and CPU), and years with the team (CPU only). Under that, it shows what the profile prefers to do; run or pass, in an easy to read pie chart. Under that, you'll see in which direction the profile likes to run and pass, in percentages. The graphic on the right is exactly the same, except for the home team. Now, let's move on to what those six options do. Start Game Choose this to get right into the game. You'll see Chris Berman do his ESPN pre-game thing, then it will start. VIP Coaches This will allow you to select VIP profiles for the team you will be facing, not playing as. You can choose any VIP profile that YOU'VE MADE, not one that was premade with the game. NFL Coaches This will allow you to select an NFL coach profile for the team you will be facing, not playing as. You can choose from any of the 32 NFL profiles that came with the game, but it's best to leave it as the default, as the right coach is selected for each team. You cannot use your own profiles for this. Lineup This will show you the lineup for the game. You can see who the key players are for both teams, as well as the players in the backfield, the receivers, the D-line, the linebackers, the secondary and the special teams. You also have the option of scrambling your starters to mix things up. For the ESPN Fantasy Draft, you can choose to "draft" players (don't worry, your roster isn't changed) to each position, like a real draft. You'll pick someone, the CPU will pick someone (or vice versa). Gives you a chance to mix things up a bit. Options This allows you to configure the options for this game and this game only. You can choose which stadium you want to play at, what the home team's playbook will be, what the away team's playbook will be, the difficulty, how long each quarter will be, the time of day and the weather conditions. VIP This options launches the VIP page, which is covered in greater detail in section [8]. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4] First Person Football | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| First Person Football is just like any standard game mode, except the entire game is viewed from the eyes of the players, like you're actually in the game. Personally, I don't like this mode too much, and the only reason I'd play it is to get the Milestone for it. While it's similar to the normal game, it does have it's own controls, and you can find them listed in the controls section. Here are a few basic tips to help you out: Always Look Around No matter what, you should always look to the left and right. Because you're in a first-person view, your peripherial vision is gone, and you can't see much. Looking around can save you from getting tackled too early. Slow the Game Down Click the right analog stick to go into a temporary slow motion state. This isn't like bulletime; not only is the opposing team moving slowly, but so are you. This feature isn't designed to give you an advantage, but it's there to help you get your bearings and to try to find an open spot. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5] ESPN 25th Anniversary | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This year, ESPN is celebrating it's 25th year as the "worldwide leader in sports". As such, Visual Concepts has included an ESPN 25th Anniversary mode into the game, which lets you take command of teams in twenty-five of the greatest, most memorable NFL moments in history. Most of them are set up like a situation, where you are given a certain amount of time in a quarter, to pull off some miraculous move. This section gives you an overview of all the situations, as well as the strategy I used to win that situation. Note that the strategy may or may not work for you, depending on how you like to play, and at what difficulty you're playing at. If you have an alternate strategy, send it to me. All alternate strategies for these challenges will be encased in @ symbols. If you have a strategy you'd like to send for one or more of these challenges, please do so! Be sure to include a name to be credited as. What is your reward for completing all twenty-five challenges? You earn the "A Quarter Century of Greatness" milestone, as well as 5,000 Crib points! |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.1] The Ice Bowl | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Dallas Cowboys at Green Bay Packers Date: December 31st, 1967 Place: Lambeau Field Final Score: DAL 17 - GB 21 "When the new heating system underneath the turf failed, the negative 13 degree temperature froze the playing field solid. In the 4th quarter, with the Cowboys leading 17 to 14, Green Bay's QB drove the Packers 67 yards to the 1 yard line. Faced with the prospect of kicking a FG to send the game into overtime, the Packers opted instead for the QB sneak, scoring the TD that crowned them NFL champions." The Goal: Be a star and lead the Pack to a cold blooded win in this famous Lambeau Field battle. The Situation: Score DAL 17, GB 14. Green Bay's possession, first and ten, on Green Bay's 32 yard line, with 4:50 left in the 4th quarter. ==--==--== Strategy -------- From the outset, pull off any passing move. All you have to do is get to the endzone and score a touchdown, then kick a successful point after. You don't need to actually drive the 67 yards as what actually happened. You can use up six plays to get 60 yards if you have to. Be sure to use your timeouts if you need them; you have three. Once you've nailed the touchdown and the PAT, all you need to do is hold off the Cowboys until the end of the game. If you happen to get the ball from them on a turnover, wear down the clock by calling the "Clock -> Take Knee" play. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.2] The Heidi Bowl | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: New York Jets at Oakland Raiders Date: November 17th, 1968 Place: Network Associates Final Score: NYJ 32 - OAK 43 "One of the most exciting finishes in sports history was not seen on television. With 1 minute, 5 seconds to go, the New York Jets led the Oakland Raiders 32-29. It was 7pm eastern time, and even though the score was close, the network switched over to the previously scheduled movie, "Heidi". In the next 65 seconds, Oakland scored two touchdowns to win, 43-32. The game went on to become known as "The Heidi Bowl". The Goal: Repeat the amazing comeback nobody saw and win with the Raiders. The Situation: Score NYJ 32, OAK 29. New York Jets possesion, kickoff, on New York's 30 yard line, with 1:05 left in the 4th quarter. ==--==--== Strategy -------- When the game begins, you'll be receiving a kickoff. Try to return the ball to the 25 yard line, at least. It'd be even easier if you could get a touchdown from the kickoff, but don't bet on that. I used the "50 H Swing" pass play under the "Tight Triple" formation to get down the field, then used a quick rushing play to cross the endzone. After scoring the first touchdown, I (you) had about around 40-45 seconds left in the quarter. You should attempt the onside kick, and try your hardest to get it back. If you fail, try to force a fumble or go for an interception. Whatever happens, DON'T let New York score a touchdown or a field goal! Since the Jets are now losing, they'll call timeouts when they need to, so conserve yours. If you're lucky, you'll be able to stop four incomplete passes and force them to turnover on fourth. When do you do this, go back to the passing play, and score another TD, then another PAT. Kick the ball all the way down the field, and hold off the Jets for the remainder of the game, which should be around 15 seconds. If you manage to snag the ball on an interception or fumble, just call the "Take Knee" play and drain the clock. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.3] Merry Christmas Miami | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Miami Dolphins at Kansas City Chiefs Date: December 25th, 1971 Place: Arrowhead Stadium Final Score: MIA 27 - KC 24 "The longest game in NFL history, at almost 83 minutes, was played on Christmas Day, 1971. The AFC Semifinal game between the Dolphins and Chiefs seesawed back and forth until the very end. The score was tied at 24 when, with just 35 seconds left, the Chiefs missed a FG wide right from 31 yards. With the score tied 24-24, the game went into OT. Finally, with 7:20 left in the second OT, the Dolphins kicked in the game winning FG." The Goal: Deliver the gift of winning by leading Miami to victory over the Chiefs. The Situation: Score MIA 17, KC 24. Kansas City's possession at the kickoff, on KC's 30 yard line, with 5:00 left in the 4th quarter. ==--==--== Although the actually game was won in overtime, you don't have to let it go into overtime. All you need to do is get a touchdown against Kansas City and snag the point after attempt (not a conversion). I did it by calling the pass play "90 Z Speed Under" under the "I Pro" formation. I kept calling this play until I get to the endzone, then ran the QB over the line for the touchdown. After the kickoff, get possession of the ball, and get within field goal range, around 20-30 yards from the post. Just score the field goal to take you up to 27 points, and hold off the Chiefs until the end of the quarter. You won't go into overtime (you'll be winning by three points), but you'll still win the situation. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.4] The Immaculate Reception | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Oakland Raiders at Pittsburgh Steelers Date: December 23rd, 1972 Place: Heinz Field Final Score: OAK 7, PIT 13 "Trailing the Raiders 7-6, with 22 seconds left, the Steelers' QB fired a desperation pass to the RB. The ball hit his hands just as the Raiders' FS laid a crushing hit on him from behind. The ball ricocheted to Steeler RB, who caught it and ran it in for a TD in a play that came to be known as "The Immaculate Reception". The Goal: Take the Steelers to an immaculate win in this classic 1972 dust up. The Situation: Score OAK 7, PIT 6. Pittsburg's possession, fourth and ten, on Pittsburgh's 40 yard line, with 22 seconds left in the 4th quarter. ==--==--== This is actually a somewhat tough one. If you don't connect with the pass and run it into the endzone, you may as well restart, because you have no timeouts. If you can't connect with the pass, your other option will be to run the QB in a quarterback sneak, and try to get to the endzone. All you need is one TD and one point after to win. If you keep having trouble, this is one of those few times I suggest you play on Rookie difficulty, just for this challenge. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ ALTERNATE STRATEGY - Sent in by Gamerofgames299 If you dont care about being true to history you can try to get to a field goal range and boot in a field goal so you win 9 to 7. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.5] The Sea of Hands | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Miami Dolphins at Oakland Raiders Date: December 21st, 1974 Place: Network Associates Final Score: MIA 26, OAK 28 "The two-time defending champion Dolphins came to Oakland for a hard-fought AFC playoff game. 4th qtr, 30 secs left, the Raiders' QB dropped back to pass. With a defender clinging to his legs, he looped the ball towards his RB. In a "sea of hands", the RB outfought the crowd of defenders to come down in the endzone with the ball. Ahead 28-26, the Raiders intercepted a last-grasp pass to steal the win." The Goal: Send the Dolphins home empty handed by winning with the Raiders. The Situation: Score MIA 26, OAK 21. Oakland's possesion, 1st and goal, on Miami's 8 yard line, with 30 seconds left in the 4th quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** All you need to win is one touchdown, and you're only eight yards away. I suggest using a passing play, specifically the "50 X Deep Drag" found on page four of the "I Pro" formation. Wait until the reciever is running from left to right in the endzone, and pass him a bullet. You have no timeouts, so if your receiver catches the pass but isn't in the endzone for some reason, hurry to the line and do it again so you don't run out of time. After scoring, just do whatever until the quarter ends. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.6] The Final Comeback | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Washington Redskins at Dallas Cowboys Date: December 16th, 1979 Place: Texas Stadium Final Score: WAS 34, DAL 35 "The Cowboys trailed the Redskins 34-21 late in the 4th quarter, but when the 'Skins fumbled the ball away with 3:49 left, their nightmare began. The Cowboy QB gunned holes in the secondary, completing 14, 19, and 26 yard passes for the TD. After the 'Skins punted, Dallas advanced to a 1st-and-goal. The Cowboys' QB hit a WR on a fade to the corner of the end zone. The win robbed the 'Skins of both the NFC East title and a trip to the playoffs." The Goal: Re-create the miracle by taking the Cowboys to victory. The Situation: Score WAS 34, DAL 21. Dallas' possesion, 1st and 10, on Dallas' 41 yard line, with 3:49 left in the fourth quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** You start with possession, so go for a quick touchdown. I used several passing plays, alternating between left and right, to get the first touchdown. After the TD, you can go for a two-point conversion, but I stuck with a PAT. After you kick the ball to Washington, you need to try to stop their offense before they score. It's okay if they score, but it makes it harder for you. Luckily, you should still have three minutes left. After gaining possession, do the same thing as before, except mix up the passes with a few rushing attempts. You only need one more TD and one more PAT, and then you can play safely, and drain the clock when you re-gain possession. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.7] The Aints' Biggest Choke | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: New Orleans Saints at San Francisco 49ers Date: December 7th, 1980 Place: San Francisco Park Final Score: NO 35, SF 38 "It still stands as the greatest regular season comeback in NFL history, and marked the arrival of a young 2nd-year QB. The 49ers were only 5 and 8 on the season, and when the Saints charged ahead 35-7 by halftime, many fans headed for home. When the 2nd half started, the Niner QB had the offense rolling. They tied the game up at 35 with 1:50 remaining, and in OT, kicked in the game-winning FG." The Goal: Re-create the Niners improbably comeback victory. The Situation: Score NO 35, SF 7. New Orleans' possession, kickoff, on New Orleans' 30 yard line, with 5:00 left in the third quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** You have two full quarters to win this game. After receiving the kickoff, play however you like, as there is no real strategy. New Orleans seems susceptible to passing plays, so maybe stick to them. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.8] Longest Playoff Game Ever | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: San Diego Chargers at Miami Dolphins Date: January 2nd, 1982 Place: Pro Player Stadium Final Score: SD 41, MIA 38 "The longest NFL playoff game ever took place in Miami in sweltering 85 degree heat. The Chargers opened a 24-0 lead in the 1st qtr, but Miami tied it up by half. Each team added another TD in the 2nd half. Each team had a chance to win the game with a FG. Miami's FG try was blocked as regulation ran out. The Chargers missed one in OT and Miami had a second kick blocked before San Diego's FG finally won the game." The Goal: "Charge" to a win over Miami in this classic scorcher. The Situation: Score SD 24, MIA 0. San Diego's possession, 1st and 10, on San Diego's 30 yard line, with 5:00 left in the second quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** There's not much to this one. You're in the lead by 24 points, so all you have to do is hold off Miami for three quarters. You can score as often as you want and Miami can score too, just don't let them overtake you and win the game. Compared to Miami, your defense isn't as good, so watch the line and do whatever is necessary to win. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.9] The Catch | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Dallas Cowboys at San Francisco 49ers Date: January 10th, 1982 Place: San Francisco Park Final Score: DAL 27, SF 28 "Rolling right on a pass play, the Niner QB was under hot pursuit when he saw his WR in the back of the endzone. Throwing on the run off his back foot, the ball was so high up that the Dallas secondary assumed it would sail out of bounds. But the 6'3" WR leapt to make a spectaclar fingertip grab that would become known as "The Catch" and would set the stage for the first of 4 Super Bowl Championships for the Niner QB." The Goal: Repeat history and win with the upstart 49ers over the Cowboys. The Situation: Score DAL 27, SF 21. San Fran's possesion, 3rd and 3, on Dallas' 6 yard line, with :58 left in the fourth quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** You're almost at the goal line, so all you need to do is a short pass, or a quick rush, and the touchdown is yours. Make the successful point after to take the lead, kick the ball to Dallas, and hold them off for the remainder of the quarter to win. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.10] Greatest Redskin Comeback | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Los Angeles Raiders (now Oakland) at Washington Redskins Date: October 2nd, 1983 Place: Washington Field Final Score: LA 35, WAS 37 "It was perhaps the greatest comeback in the Redskin QB's career. Trailing the Raiders 35-20 with 7 and a half minutes remaining, after the Raiders returned a punt 97 yards for a TD, the Skins' QB suddenly caught fire, completing 9 of 12 passes for 190 yards. The Redskins scored a FG, and two TDs to win the game, 37 to 35." The Goal: Can you bring the 'Skins back from the jaws of defeat? The Situation: Score LA 35, WAS 20. Washington's possession, 1st and ten, on WAS' 13 yard line, with 5:00 left in the fourth quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** This is just like any standard game. You start close to your own endzone, so use a couple of rushing plays to get ahead so you aren't forced into a safety. Use a combination of passing and rushing plays up the left side of the field. Once you take the lead, hold off the Raiders, and whenever you get possession, run out the clock. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.11] The Drive | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Denver Broncos at Cleveland Browns Date: January 11th, 1987 Place: Cleveland Stadium Final Score: DEN 23, CLE 20 "The Broncos QB led them on a 13 play, 98 yard, 5 minute epic drive that ended with a TD pass with only 37 seconds remaining. With the extra point, the game was sent ot overtime, where Denver stopped the Browns on the first possession, and kicked a 33-yard FG for the win. "The Drive" cemented the Bronco QB's legacy as one of the greatest come from behind quarterbacks in the history of the game." The Goal: Execute your own epic drive to bring the Broncos a win over the Browns. The Situation: Score DEN 13, CLE 20. Denver's possession, 1st and ten, on Denver's 2 yard line, with 5:00 left in the fourth quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** You've got the ball, but you're on your endzone, so run the ball to get away to avoid any safeties. You only need one touchdown and a two-point conversion to win, so do whatever you're comfortable with to drive the ball to Cleveland's endzone. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.12] The 2-Second Miscalculation | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: San Francisco 49ers at Cincinnati Bengals Date: September 20th, 1987 Place: Paul Brown Stadium Final Score: SF 27, CIN 26 "Leading the 49ers 26-20, on 4th down with 6 seconds left, all the Bengals had to do was punt, take a safety, or run the opposite direction from the defense to win the game. Instead, the coach called a sweep. The RB was tackled with 2 seconds remaining. The 49ers took over and their QB hit Jerry Rice in the right side of the endzone for the game-tying TD. The extra point gave the 49ers the unbelievable 27-26 victory." The Goal: Pull off a 2 second TD to win the game for the Niners. The Situation: Score SF 20, CIN 26. San Fran's possession, 1st and ten, on Cincinnati's 25 yard line, with 0:02 left in the fourth quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** You're at the 25 yard line, and you only have one shot, so what you need to do is pull off a long pass and guide the receiver into the endzone. I like the "RO Y Out" play under the "Triple" formation. You can try to rush, but it's a lot harder. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.13] Same Old Bucs | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Tampa Bay Buccaneers at St. Louis Cardinals (now Arizona) Date: November 8th, 1987 Place: Edward Jones Dome Final Score: TB 27, STL 31 "Playing their last season in St. Louis, the Cardinals had posted 2 consecutive 11-loss seasons. Facing the Buccaneers, they trailed 28-3 in the 4th qtr. But the Cardinals scored 4 straight TDs to take the lead 31-28. The Bucs had one last chance, but on the final play of regulation, the kicker's 53-yard FG attempt bounced off the crossbar, no good. The Cardinals' 25-point comeback is still the 4th-largest in NFL history." The Goal: Overcome this 4th quarter, 25-point deficit and lead the Cards to victory. The Situation: Score TB 28, STL 3. St. Louis' possession, 1st and 10, at STL's 20 yard line, with 5:00 left in the fourth quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** This one isn't too tough, but Tampa seems to have a solid defense. You've got five minutes to score four touchdowns and a few PAT's. Play this challenge as you would any other game, and remember, if you're running out of time after a TD, do an onside kick. You've got three timeouts in this challenge, so use them if you have to. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.14] 49ers Do It Again | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Cincinnati Bengals at San Francisco 49ers Date: January 22nd, 1989 Place: Pro Player Stadium Final Score: CIN 16, SF 20 "The 49ers had just scored a TD and trailed the Bengals 16-13 when they took possession at their own 8 with 3:10 remaining. The Niners then marched down to the CIN 10. Now down to their final 39 seconds, the QB dropped back. The HB, who was also the primary receiver, was double-covered. But a Niner WR broke loose, deep in the end zone, and caught hte pass for the latest game-winning TD in Super Bowl history." The Goal: Do it again to deliver San Francisco from the jaws of defeat. The Situation: Score CIN 16, SF 13. San Fran's possession, 1st and 10, on San Francisco's 8 yard line, with 3:10 left in the fourth quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** You need one touchdown in three minutes and ten seconds, and you start with the ball. The only bad thing is you're on your own eight yard line, so start off with a run to avoid any possible safeties. Then do your thing to get the one touchdown. Simple, huh? |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.15] Wide Right | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Buffalo Bills at New York Giants Date: January 27th, 1991 Place: Tampa Bay Stadium Final Score: BUF 19, NYG 20 "The top defensive team, the NY Giants, faced up against the top offensive team, the Buffalo Bills. The Giants succeeded in slowing the game down to their pace, and led 20-19 with 2:16 reamining. Taking over at their own 10, the Bills made one last march upfield, reaching the Giants' 29-yard line with 8 seconds left. The FG kick sailed wide right, earning the Bills the 1st of their 4 consecutive Super Bowl losses." The Goal: Change history by leading the Bills on a scoring drive to win the game. The Situation: Score BUF 19, NYG 20. Buffalo's possession, 1st and 10, on Buffalo's 10 yard line, with 2:16 left in the fourth quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** Like the other challenges that place you close to your own endzone, start off with a rush to get away from the endzone, then do whatever you like. You don't even need a touchdown; just get in field goal range and boot one in to take the lead. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.16] Houston's Hearts Ripped Out | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Houston Oilers at Denver Broncos Date: January 4th, 1992 Place: Invesco Field Final Score: HOU 24, DEN 26 "Down 24-26 on their own 2 yd line, with 2:07 remaining and no time outs, it looked like the Broncos were doomed to lose, but their QB pulled them from the jaws of defeat. On a 4th and 6, he scrambled for 7 yds. On another 4th down, he passed to his WR for a gain of 44 yds. With 16 seconds remaining, Denver kicked a FG for the win. Another great 4th qtr game-saving drive for the QB who has the most in NFL history." The Goal: Take the galloping Broncos to big win over the Oilers. The Situation: Score HOU 24, DEN 23. Denver's possession, 1st and 10, on Denver's 2 yard line, with 2:07 left in the fourth quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** This one you almost HAVE to start with a rushing play, because you're right on the endzone. Get away, get some distance, then do whatever you want. A field goal will get you the three points to take the lead, then all you have to do is hold off Houston. You have zero timeouts, so play wisely, and spike if you have to. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.17] The Two TD Comeback on KC | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Kansas City Chiefs at Denver Broncos Date: October 4th, 1992 Place: Invesco Field Final Score: KC 19, DEN 20 "Trailing the Chiefs 19 to 6 with about 5 minutes remaining, the Broncos drove 80 yards for a TD with 1:55 left. Then, after KC's offense stumbled, Denver got the ball back with 1:17 left. Just 39 seconds later, the QB threw a 12 yard TD pass. The Broncos hadn't scored a TD in the first three quarters and hadn't even scored a TD in the previous two games, but scored 2 last minute TDs to defeat the Chiefs." The Goal: Repeat another great Broncos comeback for the big win over KC. The Situation: SCORE KC 19, DEN 6. Denver's possession, 1st and 10, on Denver's 20 yard line, with 3:30 left in the fourth quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** All you need is two touchdowns and two point after attempts to win. This is one of the easiest challenges. Pass, rush, whatever you like. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.18] The Biggest Comeback Ever | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Houston Oilers at Buffalo Bills Date: January 3rd, 1993 Place: Ralph Wilson Stadium Final Score: HOU 38, BUF 41 "By the start of the 3rd, the Oilers lead the Bills 35-3. But the Bills came storming back, scoring 28 points in the 3rd quarter. In the 4th, the Bills took the lead, and though the Oilers managed a FG to send the game into OT, it was too little, too late. In the opening minutes of the OT, the Oilers' QB threw an INT inside his own territory, and Buffaly capitalized with a game-winning FG, completing the greatest comeback in NFL history." The Goal: Take the Bills on a history comeback for the win. The Situation: Score HOU 35, BUF 3. Houston's possession, kickoff, at Houston's 30 yard line, with 4:15 left in the third quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** Houston will kick the ball to you, so try to get a good return. You've got close to nine minutes to take the lead, so just work your down the field and do whatever you like to do to get the required touchdowns. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.19] The Heartbreaker | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs Date: October 17th, 1994 Place: Arrowhead Stadium Final Score: DEN 28, KC 31 "It was the final battle between two of the game's greats - the Chiefs versus the Broncos on Monday night. It was tied 7-7 after one qtr, 14-14 at halftime and 21-21 as the 4th qtr began. The Chiefs kicked a FG to take a 24-21 lead. The Broncos answered with a TD with 1:29 to go. But the Chiefs had the final opportunity, and connected for a 5 yd TD with 8 seconds to go to win the game." The Goal: Break some hearts by taking KC to a repeat of this great win. The Situation: Score DEN 28, KC 24. Denver's possession, kickoff, at Denver's 30 yard line, with 1:29 left in the fourth quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** Another easy one. Denver will kick the ball to you, so try to get a good return from it (I managed to get the 27-yard line). Denver seemed to have a hard time stopping running plays, so use them. All you need is one touchdown. You can even miss the point after if you want, because you'll take the lead with the TD. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.20] The Colts' Collapse | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Baltimore (now Indianapolis) Colts at Buffalo Bills Date: September 21st, 1997 Place: Ralph Wilson Stadium Final Score: BAL 35 35, BUF 37 "On this date the Buffalo Bills posted the 3rd biggest comback in NFL history. Trailing the Indianapolis Colts 26-0 with just under 6 minutes left in the 2nd qtr, the Bills stormed back, scoring 37 points to Indy's 3 in the next 30 minutes to take the lead. The Colts brought it within 2 points with a TD pass to WR Marvin Harrison with 14 secs left. But the 2-point conversion pass was broken up, effectively sealing the victory for the Bills." The Goal: Repeat this great Bills' comeback for a win over Indianapolis. The Situation: Score BAL 26, BUF 0. Indianapolis' possession, kickoff, on Baltimore's 30 yard line, with 4:59 left in the second quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** With three quarters, this should be simple. You'll even be given the ball from a kickoff at the beginning of the challenge, so just take your time and earn yourself those four touchdowns and three (at least) PAT's. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.21] The Super Bowl Drive | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Green Bay Packers at Denver Broncos Date: January 25th, 1998 Place: Qualcomm Stadium Final Score: GB 24, DEN 31 "Super Bowl XXXII pitted the Denver Broncos against the reigning champs, the Green Bay Packers. On the Broncos' final drive, forced to scramble on 3rd and 6, the QB leapt head first, caroming off two dfenders for the 1st down at the Green Bay 10 yd line. When he arose pumping his fist, his team's spirit was ignited. Two plays later, their halfback ran into the endzone to give them the lead and their first Super Bowl Victory." The Goal: Repeat this famous upset and win with the Broncos. The Situation: Score GB 24, DEN 24. Denver's possesion, 1st and 10, on Green Bay's 49 yard line, with 3:27 left in the fourth quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** This is a real easy one. You're pretty much at midfield, so all you need to do is score one touchdown and one PAT, then keep Green Bay from getting a TD and you'll win. Do whatever you want to drive the ball to the endzone. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.22] A Yard Too Short | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: St. Louis Rams at Tennessee Titans Date: January 30th, 2000 Place: Georgia Dome Final Score: STL 23, TEN 16 "Trailing by 7 with 1:54 left in the game, Titans' QB Steve McNair drove the Titans down the field 78 yards in a little more than 90 seconds to get them in position to tie the score. With 6 seconds remaining and no timeouts, McNair attempted a quick pass to a slanting Kevin Dyson, who caught the ball in stride at the Rams' 3. However, LB Mike Jones reacted quickly and stepped up to tackle Dyson at the 1-yard line as time expired." The Goal: Change history and get the Titans into the endzone for the win. The Situation: Score STL 23, TEN 16. Tennessee's possesion, 1st and goal, on St. Louis' 10 yard line, with 0:06 left in the fourth quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** You can pretty much do this however you wish, as passing and rushing will work. You can also use your QB to make the touchdown if you like, it's that easy. After scoring, go for the conversion so you can win 24-23. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.23] Vinatieri Strikes Again | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: St. Louis Rams at New England Patriots Date: February 3rd, 2002 Place: Louisiana Super Dome Final Score: STL 17, NE 20 "The New England Patriots defied predictions and won their first National Championship. When the Rams knotted the game up at 17 apiece with 1:30 remaining, many assumed that the game would go to OT. However, the Patriots had other intentions. Starting at their own 17 yd line, Tom Brady calmly led the Patriots' offense 53 yds upfield in just over a minute to set up Adam Vinatieri's game-winning 48 yd FG with time expiring." The Goal: No pressure... drive the Pats to a win over the Rams. The Situation: Score STL 17, NE 17. St. Louis' possession, kickoff, on St. Louis' 30 yard line, with 1:30 left in the fourth quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** Another simple challenge. The score is tied, and St. Louis is going to kick the ball to you. Do whatever you like to run up the field and score a TD. If you want to recreate what actually happened, get within field goal range and kick one in for the three points, winning 20 to 17. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.24] The Botched Snap | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: New York Giants at San Francisco Date: January 5th, 2003 Place: San Francisco Park Final Score: NYG 38, SF 39 "Trailing by 24 late in the 3rd, the 49ers mounted an all-out assault to take a 39-38 lead. In the waning seconds, the Giants botched their FG snap, and holder Matt Allen threw a desperation pass towards pass-eligible lineman Rich Seubert, who was thrown to the ground by a Niners' defender. The refs failed to whistle pass interference and the botched snap gave the Niners the 2nd largest postseason comeback victory in NFL history." The Goal: Bring the 49ers to a come-from-behind win in this wildcard battle from 2003. The Situation: Score NYG 38, SF 13. New York's possesion, kickoff, on New York's 30 yard line, with 3:05 left in the third quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** This isn't too easy, but it's not too hard, either. You'll need to score four touchdowns, and get all PAT's to take the leader, but you have half of the third and a full fourth quarter to do it. Since you've got a fair bit of time, play this out however you like. I find that running plays work great against the Giants, especially the Strong FB Toss from Garcia to Beasley. If you're running low on time after you score and you don't think you can do another drive, I recommend an onside kick so you get possession. If you're feeling lucky, you can go for two-point conversions after every touchdown. Remember, you have three timeouts, so use them if necessary. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.25] Fourth and Twenty-Six | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Teams: Green Bay Packers at Philadelphia Eagles Date: January 11th, 2004 Place: Lincoln Financial Field Final Score: GB 17, PHI 20 "It stands among the best plays in postseason history. The Eagles were losing 17 to 14, pinned on their own 26-yard line on 4th down with 26 yards to go and only 1:26 left to play. When Donovan McNabb connected with WR Freddie Mitchell on a streak across the middle for 28 yards, the Packers were left stunned in disbelief. The Eagles fed off that momentum, going on to win the game. The Goal: Fly like an Eagle and create your own winning drive over the Pack. The Situation: Score GB 17, PHI 14. Philadelphia's possesion, 4th and 26, on PHI's 26 yard line, with 1:26 left in the fourth quarter. ==--==--== Strategy ******** You've got a huge deficit in terms of yardage here, and you're on your fourth down. You need a huge run or pass to get the first down, and if you can't manage this, just do a rematch. I recommend using a long pass, as your chances of rushing are very small. Once you snag the first down, get to the endzone however you like. Score the PAT or not, doesn't matter. After kicking the ball to Green Bay, just hold them off until the quarter ends. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [6] Practice | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Practice mode allows you to do just that, practice. The following are listed in a handy checklist, so you can cross off milestones as you unlock them. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [9.1.1] User Play | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| "User Play Milestones are achieved by making the big play. Just a quick note, but the layout I use to show you the items may not be exactly the same as in your game. I still don't have the points to buy everything, so I've been buying stuff, placing it here, and resetting to get the other items, so if I've got a poster placed before a bench or something, it's because of this. If you know the right order, e-mail me and I'll credit you for whatever you send. The following items won't be listed because once you buy them, you have no choice in placing or removing it, and it's there until you delete your profile: Trivia Machine (Kickoff, 8,500) Dart Machine |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Method 1 ******** It may not be the most fair way of gaining posts, but if you're impatient and want to unlock everything, do this. Create two custom teams. For team one, let's call them the "Lamers". Set up the name of the team, city, and all that jazz. When it comes time to add players, fill the rosters with the crappiest players of each position. The three crappiest quarterbacks, the six crappiest wide receivers, so on and so forth. Save your team. Now, create the second team. Let's call them the "Killers". Set up the standard info, and when you add players, pick the best of the best. The best quarterbacks, the best linebackers, the best safeties, etc. With both teams created, go into Quick Game. Choose the "Killers" as your team and select your VIP as the profile. Make the other team the "Lamers". Give the Lamers the NFL coach "S. Mariucci" as the VIP, who is almost 75% pass. Go into the options, and set the difficulty to All-Pro or Legend, then start the game. You will notice that the Lamers really suck. Most of the time they will rush, giving you easy access to the quarterback or the runner. Passes usually result in an incomplete, or an interception/fumble. Basically, it's the easiest team you'll ever face, and because you have the best players, you'll kick their ass. Since you're playing on All-Pro or Legend, you'll get the most points with the higher modifier. There you go. It's not fair, it's cheap, some may even consider it a "cheat" of sorts, but if you're anxious to unlock the crib (maybe you rented the game), then this is a good way for you to do it. ==--==--== Method 2 ******** 1. Setup a franchise, pick a team and attach your VIP to it. 2. Next, go into franchise settings and change the "sim quarter length" to 15 min and difficulty to legend. 3. Go to your teams week one game, go to the game cast live option. 4. If you wish, change the GCL sim speed to fast. 5. Sim the game as far in as you wish, but probably no further than right about the 2min warning (you can push it further just the speed is pretty hyped and you dont want to sim the full game) 6. Hit start at whichever point you wish and chose the "jump in" option. 7. At this point, finish out the game however you like, and reap the points not only for your actions, but also for what the cpu did during the sim (so even if you dont move the ball a yard, you still get a boatload of points.) Submitted by: Michael A./ph_mole ==--==--== Method 3 ******** Setup a quick game w/ one of the best defensive teams (you) against one of the worst offensive teams (computer). Alternatively you can create two teams with the same strategy as was suggested earlier. Set the quarter length to 8 min (you can't accomplish milestones w/ a quarter length any longer), set the difficulty to "Legend" (if you want the most points) or "Rookie" (if you just want the most milestones), and get ready to play some D. Basically just call the "coach pick" plays on D unless you completely disagree w/ the computer like I do sometimes. Make any line, linebacker, or secondary adjustments before the snap. During the play don't try to control any player. Right after the QB throws the ball hit "B" to control the nearest player to the ball. This is usually the guy in position to make either a tip, interception, or tackle. Either way, you get the stat because you "controlled" the player who made the play. If a computer controlled defender is getting ready to sack the QB, hit "B" to control him just before he makes the sack. Use the same principal on running plays to make tackles and tackles for loss. You can easily accomplish most of the defensive milestones in a game or two with this strategy. Any time you get the ball punt it on first down to get the most defensive plays in as possible throughout the game. It's not cheating, but it is taking advantage of the "select closest player" button. Submitted by: Dan R. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [9.6] Trophy Room | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| On the upper floor of your Crib is the trophy room. Over time, as you complete milestones, more and more trophies will be added to your room, and you can view them, complete with the date, time and teams when you won it. This section will list the trophies, in their order, so if you're missing one, you'll be able to see which ones you haven't yet unlocked by checking here. Trophies come in bronze, silver and gold color. If I list a trophy in a position that's different from yours, it's only because mine is of a lower or higher award. For example, the trophy that lists "1500 career points" is silver, but once you score 3,000, your trophy is upgraded to a gold, and the 1500 trophy essentially disappears. So if my trophy says 230 career rushing touchdowns, and yours says 150, don't worry; it'll be upgraded to gold soon, and there's nothing wrong with your game. All trophy lists go from left to right, top to bottom. It's basically your typical user profile found in most sports games, although it does a lot more. It not only saves your stats (wins, losses, crib, etc.), but it tracks how you play the game. If you pass along left field most of the time, your VIP will reflect this and give you a left field pass percentage of 95% (compared to other stuff, for example). With the VIP, you can play your friends, even if you're not actually playing them. Have them load their VIP into your system, and you can play a virtual them, whenever you like. The computer will read your friend's VIP, and play as it dictates. If your friend likes to run the ball up the middle or call hot routes a lot, that's what the computer will do. The VIP records the following information. You can also view the VIP profile for all 32 NFL coaches. Offensive Playcalling Tendencies This page shows what kind of moves you prefer doing, shown in a percentage as measured against the other moves. Coach's Pick How often you let the CPU pick a play for you. Play Flip How often you like to flip plays Hurry To Line How often you like to hurry to the line after a play Motion How often you send a man in motion Audible How often you call audibles Hot Routes How often you call and use hot routes ==--==--== Offensive Tendencies This page shows what offensive maneuvers you like to use, whether you prefer tapping the button or charging the move first, and what your favorite hot route is. In a pie chart, you're shown whether you tap or charge moves. Tap is measured in red, and charge is measured in yellow. The more of a certain color, the more you use that method. Underneath the pie chart, in a square box, the VIP shows what hot route you like to call the most. To the left of both of these is a large circular chart with five words: Stiff Arm (top), Shoulder (middle-right), Spin (bottom-right), Shimmy (bottom-left), and Juke (upper-left). There is a large blue arrow that shows which move you tend to use the most. If you like to shoulder charge into people, the arrow will be pointing at the "Shoulder" keyword. ==--==--== Defensive Tendencies (1 of 2) This page shows some of the moves you like to use on defense, from the D-Line to tackling. In a pie chart, you're shown whether you tap or charge moves. Tap is measured in red, and charge is measured in yellow. The more of a certain color, the more you use that method. Underneath the pie chart is a half-circle (like a car's speed gauge) labeled Tackling. It has the words: Dive (left), Balanced (upper-middle), and Wrap (right). It shows what method of tackling you prefer to use. Do you dive after attackers? Do you like to wrap them up and take them down? Or do you use a combination to balance it out? To the left of both of those is a circular picture labeled "D-Line Shift". This records what method you like to organize your D-Line in five categories: Even (top), Right (upper-right), Pinch (lower-right), Spread (lower-left), and Left (upper-left). Whatever you use the most is what the arrow will point at. ==--==--== Defensive Tendencies (2 of 2) This page shows the remainder of your defensive moves. On the right side of the page are two half-circles. The top one is labeled "Int Pass vs. Block Pass", and is labeled: 100 (left), 50/50 (top), and 100 (right). What this measures is how often you block passes (tip them away, causing an interception), or how often you grab a pass for an interception. The arrow will point somewhere in between the three numbers. If you block passes half the time, but grab interceptions the other half, it'll hover around the 50/50 mark. Underneath this is the Hot Blitz Usage graph, labeled: 0% (left), 50% (top), and 100% (right). This measures how often you use blitz attacks. To the left of these graphs is a large circle labeled "Def. Special Moves" with the words: Club (top), Swim (top-right), Rip (lower-right), Spin (lower-left), and Rush (upper-left). This graph measures what kind of defensive moves you like to use the most. ==--==--== Defensive Tendencies Shifts This page shows how you use your LB and Secondary shifts. The left graph, labeled "LB Shifts", has the following: Even (top), Right (top- right), Pinch (lower-right), Spread (lower-left), and Left (upper-left). This circle records in what positions you shift your LBs into. The right graph, labeled "Secondary Shifts", has the following: Even (Top), Inside (upper-right), Off (lower-right), Press (lower-left), and Outside (upper-left). This circle records in what positions you shift your secondaries into. ==--==--== Yards Per Game This screen shows what you average per game in six categories. Rush For How many rushing yards you gain per game Rush Allowed How many rushing yards you allow per game Pass For How many passing yards you gain per game Pass Allowed How many passing yards you allow per game Scoring For How many points you score per game Scoring Allowed How many points you allow per game ==--==--== Offensive Recap This screen shows how good you are at converting on third and fourth, as well as the type of move you like to do. At the top of the page, there is a pie graph on the left and right. The left one shows ow often you like to run versus how often you like to pass. Run is measured in red, and pass is measured in blue. If the pie is mostly blue, it means you pass most of the time. The right pie graph shows whether most of your touchdowns are from rushing or passing. Rushing is measured in red, and passing is measured in blue. If the pie is mostly red, it means most of your touchdowns are scored on rushing plays. Underneath the pie's are two half-circles. The one on the left is labeled "3rd Down Conversion" and has the following: 0% (left), 50% (top), and 100% (right). The gray line will point to one of the numbers, which measures how successful you are in converting a third down to a first. If it hovers around the fifty, you seem to convert successfully half the time, but don't the other half. To the right of that circle is one labeled "4th Down Conversion". It is exactly the same as the 3rd down conversion circle, except it measures how often you turn fourth downs into first downs. ==--==--== Rushing Breakdown This page shows you on what side of the field you like to rush, as well as the average amount of yards. On the left side, you'll see a bar graph labeled "Avg Att Per-Direction". There are three bars labeled Left, Middle, Right (blue, red, yellow). The higher the bar, and the reading of the number, shows your average attempt per direction. The right side bar graph, labeled "Avg Yds Per-Direction", is labeled the same, but measures the average amount of yards you run on what side of the field. ==--==--== Passing Chart This page shows where you like to pass the most. The page is split into nine categories: Long Left, Long Middle, Long Right, Medium Left, Medium Middle, Middle Right, Short Left, Short Middle and Short Right. The numbers in each box are your completion/attempts. If it says you have 23/38 for Medium Left, it means out of 38 medium length throws to the left side of the field, 23 of them are caught successfully. ==--==--== NFL Comparison This page shows you how to play, compared to other teams in the NFL. The left bar graph, labeled "Rushing Comparison", shows how many yards per game you get out of rushing plays. You are represented in blue, the NFL in red. If your bar is higher than the NFL, it means you get more yards in average. The right bar graph is exactly the same, except it's for passing yards. ==--==--== Red Zone Efficiency This page shows how efficient you are in the red zone (the goaline). Field Goal For How many field goals you score from the red zone Field Goal Allowed How many field goals you allow from the red zone T.D. For How many touchdowns you score from the red zone T.D. Allowed How many touchdowns you allow from the red zone Scoring % Your scoring percentage from the red zone Scoring % Allowed The scoring percentage of others from the red zone |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [10.1.1] Stat Book | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| By going into the VIP option under FEATURES, you can view your stats that accumulate from each and every game you've played and ever will play. Team Rosters This option takes you to the team rosters for all 32 NFL teams, as well as the free agency. You can edit any player, from his name and clothing to his stats. You can choose to assign a player to any team you wish, or release him to the free agency. If you're browsing the free agency, you can assign a free agent to any team you want him to be on. You can also edit the free agents. Depth Chart This option allows you to reorder the depth chart of the offense, defense and special teams of all 32 teams. Manage Playbooks This option allows you to change the playbooks of any NFL team, allowing you to add or remove plays at your whim. Downloaded Rosters This option shows you the rosters you've downloaded. If you don't have Xbox Live, or haven't downloaded any rosters, chances are this option won't lead anywhere. Reset Roster Resets everything you've done, in case you screwed up somewhere along the line. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [10.3] Historic Teams | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| With this option, you can load a historic team, then change the players names, appearances and stats to be as accurate as possible, since most teams use names like "Quarterback" or "Tight End" or "Defensive End". The available historic teams are: 49ers '81 49ers '89 49ers '94 49ers '03 Bears '63 Bears '86 Bengals '81 Bengals '88 Bills '64 Bills '90 Broncos '77 Broncos '88 Broncos '98 Browns '64 Browns '86 Buccaneers '79 Buccaneers '99 Buccaneers '02 Cardinals '75 Chargers '63 Chargers '80 Chargers '94 Chiefs '69 Chiefs '93 Colts '70 Cowboys '71 Cowboys '77 Cowboys '92 Dolphins '72 Dolphins '84 Eagles '60 Eagles '80 Eagles '04 Falcons '80 Falcons '98 Giants '56 Giants '86 Giants '90 Giants '03 Jaguars '99 Jets '68 Jets '98 Lions '53 Lions '91 Oilers '61 Oilers '79 Packers '66 Packers '96 Packers '04 Panthers '96 Panthers '03 Patriots '85 Patriots '01 Patriots '03 Raiders '67 Raiders '76 Raiders '83 Rams '79 Rams '99 Ravens '00 Redskins '82 Redskins '87 Redskins '91 Saints '91 Saints '00 Seahawks '84 Seahawks '99 Steelers '75 Steelers '78 Steelers '95 Texans '62 Titans '99 Vikings '99 Vikings '73 Vikings '98 |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [10.4] Team Create | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Ah, one of the best parts of sports games, this option allows you to create your own team. The first step to creating your team is to choose your logo. There are quite a few options to choose from, like an alien, a train, a pot of gold, a pair of swords, a flaming skull, a ninja, and more. You can basically create any team, like the Fire Skulls, or something. I'm unimaginative, I know. After choosing your logo, you'll be able to input the name of the city of the team, the name of the team, the team's short name, and the coach's first and last name. After setting up the names, you'll be able to choose what your home stadium will be. You can pick between any of the standard NFL team stadiums, stadiums specially created for the different logos of the different teams, like Gold Coast Dome for the pot of gold logo, or any unlocked stadiums purchased through the Crib. After choosing your stadium, you'll be able to draft players. You can choose from any player in any position from any NFL team. You need a total of 50 players minimum, with 54 being the max. You need: 3 Quarterbacks 1 Kicker 1 Punter 6 Wide Receivers 6 Cornerbacks 2 Free Safeties 2 Strong Safeties 3 Half Backs 2 Full Backs 3 Tight Ends 4 Outside Linebackers 3 Inside Linebackers 2 Corners 3 Guards 3 Tackles 3 Defensive Tackles 3 Defensive Ends |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [10.5] Player Create | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Even better then the Team Create option is the player create option. There's nothing cooler then making yourself star quarterback of your team. When you first decide to create your player, you'll have to configure all the basic stuff, which is: First Name Last Name Position Jersey Number College Birth Month Birth Day Birth Year Best Hand After selecting the basics, you will configure your player's appearance. Want him to look like you, or be a fat guy? Body Type Skin Tone Face Height Weight After setting your appearance, you can choose what equipment your player will use. You can choose: Helmet Face Mask Face Shield Eyeblack Mouthpiece Left Glove Right Glove Left Wristband Right Wristband Left Elbow Pad Right Elbow Pad Sleeves Left Shoe Right Shoe Neck Roll Turtleneck With your equipment selected, it's time to move on to your stats. You can pick from pre-configured types of players depending on what position you chose (any position not listed, like Kicker, has no pre-configured attributes): Quarterback Pocket QB Scrambling QB Balanced QB Wide Receiver Speed WR Hands WR Balanced WR Cornerback Cover CB Physical CB Balanced CB Free Safety Cover FS Physical FS Balanced FS Strong Safety Cover FS Physical FS Balanced FS Halfback Finesse HB Power HB Balanced HB Fullback Blocking FB Catching FB Balanced FB Tight End Catching TE Blocking TE Balanced TE Outside Linebacker Run Stop OLB Coverage OLB Balanced OLB Inside Linebacker Run Stop ILB Coverage ILB Balanced ILB Center Run Blocking OL Pass Blocking OL Balanced OL Guard Run Blocking OL Pass Blocking OL Balanced OL Tackle Run Blocking OL Pass Blocking OL Balanced OL Defensive Tackle Run Stop DL Pass Rush DL Balanced DL Defensive End Run Stop DL Pass Rush DL Balanced DL If you don't want to choose a pre-determined type of player, you can set your own attributes. They are listed here, with a brief description. Remember, the higher the number, the better your player in that category, and the lower the number, the worse the player. For example, a player with a 97 in Speed can run very fast, while his rating of Hold On To Ball of 13 means he has a tendency to drop it a lot when attempting to catch. Speed How fast you run. Agility How agile you are on the field (the higher the number, the better the chance of pulling off a stiffarm, shoulder charge, etc.). Strength How good you are at holding off defenders/performing special moves. Jumping How good you are at jumping (the higher the number, the higher the jump). Pass Accuracy How accurate your passes are. Pass Arm Strength How powerful your arm is (the higher the number, the more distance). Pass Read Coverage How good your player can read coverages. Scramble How good your QB is at scrambling. Leadership I'm not sure what this means. Do you know? Let me know! Composure How good you are under pressure (i.e. the defenders break through the line and you're forced to throw the ball; this determines how good that throw will be). Hold On To Ball How often your player will hold onto the ball after he catches it. A low number can result in a lot of drops and fumbles. Power Run Style What kind of run style your player uses. Stamina How long your player can last before having to be subbed out. Durability I'm not sure what this means. Do you know? Let me know! Break Tackle How good you are at breaking out of a tackle. Catch How often you can catch the ball. Run Blocking How good you are at stopping runners. Pass Blocking How good you are at blocking or intercepting passes. Run Route How good your player is at running Hot Routes. Run Coverage How good you are at reading run coverage. Pass Rush How good you are at rushing on passes. Tackle How good you can tackle opponents. Coverage How good your player is at covering. Consistency How consistent you are (i.e. you'll consistently throw good passes). Aggressiveness How aggressive you are on the field. Kick Power How powerful your kick is. Kick Accuracy How accurate your kick is (punts, field goals, PATs, kickoffs). |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [10.6] Celebrations | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| You can program up to five different celebrations on five buttons: B, X, Y, LEFT TRIGGER, RIGHT TRIGGER There are several celebrations available from the beginning, and you can buy ten extra ones (one per catalog) from the various catalogs you unlock in your Crib. It allows you to use custom music that you've copied to your Xbox for play in the game. You can choose to have music play for any of the following events: Touchdown, HOME Field Goal/Point After, OME Sack, HOME First Down, HOME Made 2pt Conversion, HOME Safety, HOME Fumble Recovery, HOME Interception, HOME Punt/Kick Return, HOME Incomplete On Third Down, AWAY Loss on 3rd Down, AWAY Miss 2pt Conversion, AWAY Miss FG/PAT, AWAY End of Quarter End of Game Stadium Intro Two Minute Warning You can choose to have as many songs play for as many events if you want, or only have songs play for two events, leaving the rest blank. To see what songs other people have, check section [13]. You can also e-mail me what songs you choose to have play to give others an idea of what people like. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [11] Extras | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| The Extras menu has all the options that don't fit anywhere else. Offensive Training Watch a video showing you offensive techniques, with moves brand new to 2K5. Defensive Training Watch a video showing you defensive techniques, with moves brand new to 2K5. ESPN Video Games Watch a video with short clips from different ESPN 2K5 titles; they are ESPN NFL 2K5, ESPN NHL 2K5, ESPN NBA 2K5, and ESPN College Hoops 2K5. Game Manual This option allows you to view the in-game manual. It is much, much, much, much more comprehensive then the standard instruction booklet. Reference Guide This a guide to help those who don't understand much about football. It explains what formations mean, what audibles are, how you read coverages, etc. Game Registration This doesn't do anything except bring up a screen telling you to register your game at ESPNVideoGames.com Credits View the credits. You know, the people who made the game. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12] Your Franchise | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| The meat and potatoes of any sports game, this section gives you details on all aspects of Franchise mode, from pre-season to mid-season to post-season. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.1] Setting Up Your Franchise | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| When beginning a franchise, you'll have to configure several options, and I'll explain those options here. Weekly Preparation On/Off. If you choose on, you will be able to set a workout/training schedule for your players before they play a game, possibly increasing or decreasing their stats for that game. Turn it off, and you won't bother with it. First Person Football On/Off. If you choose on, all games will take place as if they are First Person Football games. If you choose off, you'll play as you normally would. Fantasy Draft Roster On/Off. If on, you'll be able to perform a fantasy draft at the beginning of the season without having to deal with the standard rosters. If off, you will start the season with default rosters. Customize League On/Off. If on, you will be allowed to place what teams you want into what divisions you want. If off, everything will be like in the NFL. Preseason Games On/Off. If on, you will play four pre-season games that serve as nothing more than gaining Crib points, as they don't count toward your record for that season. If off, you skip them and head straight to the season. Trade Deadline On/Off. If on, once the trade deadline passes, you will not be able to initialize any trades or place players on the trading block until next season. If off, you can trade all the way up to the Super Bowl. Owner Firing On/Off. If on, you can be fired if your team sucks and doesn't play well. Getting fired is the equivilant of dying in an action game; game, and franchise, over. If off, you don't have to worry about it and will last forever even with a record of 1-16. Edit Rookies On/Off. If on, you'll be able to edit the stats of rookie players. If off, you can't. Draft Players Player/Assistant Coach. If you choose Player, you'll take care of drafting players during the post-season. If you choose Assistant Coach, the CPU will handle the draft. Sign Draft Picks Player/Assistant Coach. If you choose Player, you'll take care of signing drafted players, and setting up their salary. If you choose Assistant Coach, the CPU will take care of it. Re-sign Players Player/Assistant Coach. If you choose Player, you'll have to re-sign your players once their contract ends. If you choose Assistant Coach, the CPU will automatically do it. Sign and Cut Player/Assistant Coach. If you choose Player, you'll be responsible for signing and releasing players. If you choose Assistant Coach, the CPU will do it. Update Depth Chart Player/Assistant Coach. If you choose player, you'll be the one who updates the depth chart whenever it's necessary. If you choose Assistant Coach, you will be leaving it to the CPU. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.2] Choosing Your Team | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This is real simple. You choose what team you want to play as. Didn't really need a whole section dedicated to it, huh? You can choose from any of the 32 NFL teams, or multiple teams if you want. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.3] Schedule | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This is the screen from where you start all your games, from pre-season to season to Superbowl. The default view just shows who you will be playing, that team's win/loss record, and where you'll be playing. For example, if it just says "Detroit Lions", that means you'll be playing in YOUR city. If it says "At Detroit Lions", that means you'll be playing in THEIR city. You can view a weekly schedule, which shows your game and all other games, by pressing BLACK or WHITE. After a game, you can check the schedule again, and it'll give you the score. At this point, you can also click in the RIGHT STICK to watch SportsCenter for that week. Once you press start to begin a game, a screen will pop up, asking you for your selection. Your choices are: Play Game Just that; start the game. GameCast Live This lets you simulate the game in real-time, as if you were playing a text- based sports title. You can jump into the action at any time. Simulate Game This simulates the current game completely. Simulate Week This simulates the entire week completely. Simulate Pre-Season/Season This simulates the entire pre-season or season completely. ==--==--== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.4] Front Office | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This is where you handle everything, from trades and salary management to contracts and what your team needs. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.4.1] Franchise Status | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This screen gives you a lot of info on the status of your franchise. At the top of the screen, you've got your team's city name (ATL for Atlanta, for example), and it tells you your wins, losses, ties, percentage of wins versus losses, winning streak, power ranking, and a few other stats. The middle of the screen gives you your Coaching Goals, which is what you must meet to remain coach of the team (assuming you have Owner Firing turned on). My team, the Atlanta Falcons, has the following goals: Primary Make the playoffs Secondary Improve the team's rush defense Achieve a rank of at least 5 in the league To the right of the goals is your status of achieving that goal. If you seem to be heading to completing a goal, it'll say "On Track", for example. At the bottom of the screen is the Contract Details. It tells you how many years you have left in your contract. This means that if Owner Firing is enabled, and you aren't doing very good, you can be fired, which basically means game over. It also tells you who your last opponent was, who won and by what score. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.4.2] Contracts | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This screen allows you to view and change contracts with all your players. You can choose to view a player's contract, which tells you how many years you've got that player for, their salary, their signing bonus, the team salary, and the +/- of cap. If you choose Re-Negotiate Contract (just Negotiate Contract for free agents), you can attempt to sign players. You'll be given information on the player, from their name, their overall rating, how long they've been pro, and what their current contract is. At the top right, you'll see what the player wants, and it tells you what salary he expects, what kind of contract he wants, what signing bonus he wants, and how many years he wants. You don't always have to offer what the player wants, so negotiate. Choosing "Release To Free Agency" will place that player into the free agent list. You'll get rid of the player and free up some money, but you'll have to pay the player a penalty. Choosing "Place on Trading Block" will put that player on the trading block, and other teams can view your block to see if you have someone they want. You can also view other team's trading blocks and see if anyone interests you. Choosing "Begin Trade" allows you to trade that player for someone of your choice immediately, without having to bother with the block. Choosing "Assign Jersey Number" allows you to change that players jersey number. This is really just an added feature that has no affect on your player, team or franchise. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.4.3] Cap Management | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This screen shows who your highest paid players are, and how much money/cap room you'll have within a six year period, shown to you in a graph and text form. This screen is useful if you're trying to find out how to free up cap space and who is costing you the most. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.4.4] Team Needs | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This screen shows you how many players in each position you have, as well as what you need. Numbers in yellow mean you don't have the minium of that position. Clicking in the RIGHT STICK allows you to view a player's player card. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.4.5] Trades | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This takes you to the trade screen, where you can choose to trade players. The CPU isn't dumb, so don't expect to trade a quarterback with a rating of 24 for a quarterback with an 89 rating. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.4.6] Trading Block | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Place players on or take players off the trading block. You can also view the trading block for other teams, and see if they are offering anyone of interest. When adding players to the trading block, you can add specific guidelines. For example, if you need a quarterback but have an excess kicker, you can place the kicker on the trading block with the guideline of "quarterback" with a rating of your choice, and you'll only be offered trades that meet your guidelines. You can also create a guideline for draft picks, so you could trade someone, but only for a first round pick if you wanted. ==--==--== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.5] Gameplan | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This is where you configure how your team will play games. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.5.1] Depth Chart | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| The depth chart allows you to reorder lineups for your team. If you want a quarterback who usually doesn't start to be the starting QB, do it here. You can choose to reorder charts for offense, defense and special teams. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.5.2] Playbook Manager | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| You can edit or create a new playbook from here, if you're not happy with your team's default. Add plays, remove plays, whatever you want. It's possible to make a playbook full of nothing but passing plays, but that's not recommended. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.5.3] Coach's Card | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| View the player card of your coach. At the left, you'll see a picture of the coach. In my case, the picture is of Jim Mora Jr., who coaches the Atlanta Falcons. At the top of the screen is the "Current Season" statis, which shows the same information found in the Franchise Goals screen. The middle part of the screen shows a bio of the coach. It's short and simple. For example, mine is "An energetic defensive mind who will finally get his chance to lead." At the bottom of the screen is the "Coaching History". This has nothing to do with the coach's real life stats, just in the game. It records how long the coach has been with the team, the longest winning streak, how many playoffs he's gotten to, how many Superbowl's he's gotten to, how many winning season's he's had, his season record, his win/loss streak for the current season, and his career stats (career as in multiple franchise years, not his real-life career stats). |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.5.4] Coach Gameplan | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Change the way your team will play. You can move sliders to the left and right. These options really only matter if you're playing in Coach Mode or if you use GameCast Live. Offense: Run/Pass The further to the left, the more the coach will choose running plays. The further to the right, passing will be the order of the day. Pass: Short/Deep Over to the left, you'll focus on short passes. Middle is mid-range, and all the way to the right are deep, long distance passes. Run: Outside/Inside Over to the left, you'll prefer to make inside runs. Over to the right, it's outside runs. Defense: Run/Pass Left, you focus on stopping runs. Right, you focus on passes. Defense: Man/Zone Left, you focus on man-to-man coverage. Right, you focus on playing the zone. Blitz Left, you hardly ever blitz. Right, you do it all the time. Cover Short/Deep Left, you cover short. Right, you prefer deeper coverage. ==--==--== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.6] ESPN.com | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This is basically the awards/stats/communication section, where you can check up on stuff around the league. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.6.1] E-Mail Inbox | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Read e-mails that are automatically sent to you. You'll get a ton of different e-mails on different subjects, from scouting reports of your next opponent, to weekly power rankings, to the results of your last game, to who was injured during the week (your team and others), and more. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.6.2] Team Standings | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This shows where your team ranks among other teams in your league. You can view either the NFC or AFC. Team(s) in yellow are teams you play as. If your team has an "x" next to it, it means you've clinched the playoff berth. A "y" means you've clinched the division title, a "z" means you've clinched the first round bye, and an "*" means you've got home field advantage. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.6.3] Transactions | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This screen allows you to view all the transactions you've made, as well as what other teams have made. This means who has been signed, who has been released, who has been terminated, etc. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.6.4] Statistics | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This screen shows all the statistics for all teams for the current season, from passing yards to rushing yards to third down conversion attempts, and a whole hell of a lot more. You can sort the list by any category. You can also view individual player stats, as well as who is leading the league in different categories, including passing and defense. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.6.5] Player Awards | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This screen lets you view the primetime awards players have been awarded by Chris Berman. At the end of the season, you can also see who won individual season awards, which are: Most Valuable Player Offensive Player of the Year Defensive Player of the Year Offensive Rookie of the Year Defensive Rookie of the Year Rushing Title Superbowl MVP |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.6.6] Injury Report | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This screen shows you what players have been injured, their position, what kind of injury they've sustained, and how long they're going to be out. You can opt to place a player on the reserve list. This removes the player from your roster for the entire season, and can't be reversed, but if a player is going to be out for twenty weeks, you should do this and sign a replacement for one year. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.6.7] Power Rankings | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This is a simple screen and just shows you the power rankings of all 32 NFL teams, and where you (and they) stand. You've got your win/loss/tie record, what your previous power ranking was (if you've moved up or down), and who your last opponent was, and who won (as well as the score). ==--==--== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12.7] Weekly Preparation | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This is a new feature to 2K5, and it allows you to train your players on a week-by-week basis. If your scouting report shows that your next opponent has a very solid passing game, you can train your players in passing techniques to better prepare them for the game. You can have your players exercise, play practice games, run drills, or watch videos. For injured players, you can attempt to rehabilitate them, to get them back to playing condition faster. You can also set up coach preps. You can hold a press conference, which can boost team morale and focus, have a meeting with your team with different tones. For example, if you lost by a very small margin, you can choose to have the theme of the meeting as "Disappointed". However you choose to do things, your players with either decrease or increase in ratings. If one of your star players loses four points from a stat, don't worry, it's not permanent; it's just the upcoming game. I could take the time to explain a good preparation, but instead, I recommend you check out another FAQ on GameFAQs, written by yodawgyo. It is called the "Weekly Preparation FAQ" and can be found here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox/game/920177.html =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [13] Teams | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| There are 32 total NFL teams, as well as nine special teams, for a total of 41 teams. ********************************************************** There was an update on Xbox Live that lets you get the Pro Bowl milestone. If you don't have Live you can create a team called the AlohaNFC with NFC as their short name. It doesn't matter what the icon is, location, coach, etc. Start up a franchise and customize the league so your custom team is in the NFC. Sim through a franchise until you get to the Pro Bowl. When you get there, make sure the NFC wins, and the Pro Bowl milestone will be unlocked. Submitted by: dmarteng and brassmonkey62 from the GameFAQs board) Game Freezes 1 ************** I made two created teams. I decided to delete the top created team on the list. When I started a quick game I went selected the NFL coaches. Then I went down the list of coaches to the bottom. When it got to the coach name of the created team I deleted the game froze. I tried a couple of times and it froze each time. Submitted by: dmarteng ==--==--== Switched Trophies ***************** In the trophy room, for players Donovan McNabb and Duece McCallister, the trophies are switched. It shows the number and color for the trophy. ie., dark green #5 is supposed to be McNabb, instead it reads McCallister. Same shelf in the trophy room. On the second shelf, the trophies for Dante Hall and Duante Culpepper are also switched. Submitted by: ESPN NFL 2K5 Fanatic ==--==--== Clipping Glitch *************** Say I have a RB who has 100 yards rushing. The next play, he runs for 20 yards, but another player on my team clips a defender. The stats should read that the play never really happened, and there is 15 penalty yards. Instead, the running back loses 35 yards off of his running stats, which would put his rushing yards down to 65. That's a major glitch when you have a very long run called back by a clip. The runner will lose the yards ontop of the yards he has already, plus another 15 yards for the clip. A: No, it is not. You're stuck with a salary cap. Q: I must be blind; where's the Season option? A: There is no Season option. Q: How do I do a celebration before scoring? A: When you're within five yards, let go off the left analog stick, as if you were going to stop moving, and your player will automatically perform a dance into the endzone. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [A] Contact Information | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| To contact me, send an e-mail to the following address: jpaterson000 [at] msn [dot] com Replace [at] with @ and [dot] with the period.
