Introduction ------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to the ULTIMATE NBA Live 2004 guide. Having trouble with your game? Mad because you can't win a game on Superstar? Well, you've came to the right place to learn all the secrets, hints, and tips to suceed in this game. I would play online to show you that I know what I'm talking about, but I can't because I'm behind a firewall at a school that doesn't allow you to go on the net if you don't have a web browser. If anyone can fix this or help me installing a web browser on my PS2, I would be very happy. Anyway, if you are a newbie to the game you can rework your game and find out all the information here to win. Need help on dynasty mode? Then feel free to browse at the Table of Contents and work your way down to the Dynasty section. Need help on shooting, stealing, passing, or rebounding? Well, look at the corresponding sections for help. Everything that you ever wanted to know about NBA Live 2004 will be in this guide sooner or later. Thank you, and enjoy! ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. Update History ------------------------------------------------------------------ April 4, 2004 (version 0.2) - Huge update though there is still a lot more to do for the guide. Finished the whole My NBA Live section, added a Task list, added a Jukebox section and added all the Team Rankings. I still got a lot more to do so look for a few more updates really soon. I am thinking about adding everyone's player ranking to the guide but that will take an enormous amount of time. If I get a lot of feedback wanting that, I'll do it for you guys. Also, if you have any questions or comments about this guide feel free to e-mail me at fanbaseballdrew@aol.com. I love getting mail and I will respond to it within 6 - 12 hours. Thank you and enjoy! April 1, 2004 (version 0.1) - Welcome to the beginning of my NBA Live 2004 guide. Though the game came out a while back, I feel that it is necessary to make a comprehensive guide of all the information in NBA Live 2004. To do that, I would like all the user feedback I can possibly get. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions about this guide please e-mail me at: fanbaseballdrew@aol.com. I will usually respond anywhere within 6-12 hours to your email. Thank you and enjoy reading this guide! ------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Controls ------------------------------------------------------------------ The controls in NBA Live 2004 are very easy to get familiarized with after a few games. Here I have listed all the controls in the game. ------------- Menu Controls ------------- Highlight Menu Item D-Button (up/down) Cycle Choices/Move Sliders D-Button (left/right) Select/Go to next screen X Return to Previous Screen Triangle ------------- Offense ------------- Move Player Left Analog Stick Shoot Circle Button (Hold then Release) Pass X Button Dunk/Lay-up Square (Double tap to adjust your shot) Pro-Hop/Power Dribble Traingle (Tap for power dribble when player is still) Turbo R1 Button Back Down Defender/Protect L1 Button Alley-oop Pass R2 Button Direct Pass L2 Button + Square, X, Circle, or Triangle Call an Offensive Quick Play D-Button EA Sports Freestyle Control Right Analog Stick Off-Ball Switch R3 + Sqaure, X, Circle, Triangle Call Timeout Select Button Pause Game Start Button ------------- Call-For-Pass Inbounding ------------- Move Pass Receiver Left Analog Stick Call For Pass X Button Direct Player Switch L2 Button + Square, X, Circle, or Triangle Strategic Player Switch D-Button to switch to the best shooter ------------- Additional Low Post Moves ------------- Slam Dunk Left Analog Stick towards basket + Square Fade Away Jumper Left Analog Stick away from basket + Circle Power Dribble Triangle Button Spin Move From Back Down Left Analog Stick in direction + Release L1 ------------- Player Locked Offense ------------- Make Computer Shoot Cricle or Square Call For Pass From Comp. Perfecting Control - Offensive ------------------------------------------------------------------ Now that you know all the controls in the game, each control can be used to your advantage if you know how to use it. Here I have listed how each offensive control works with a simple but helpful tutorial of how to use it. ------------- Move Player ------------- Moving the player is quite easy. Simply move around the left analog stick to move your player in the corresponding direction as you are moving the analog. Make sure that when you are using the analog not to let it slip off your finger when you are next to the out of bounds area. By doing this, you will simply run out of bounds. ------------- Shoot ------------- To be a great shooter in NBA Live 2004 you need to master your release timing. To shoot you simply hold Circle until you feel that your shooter has reached his peak jump. The problem with this is that sometimes you are nervous and let your finger release the button too soon. This will cause the shot to have a worse probability to go in. Also, if you hold the shoot button too long, you can be called for a travel. Personally, I don't think that it is hard to shoot at all in this game. Whenever I have an open jumper my shot drains nine out of ten times. How? Well it's quite easy. I release the ball at the end of the incline of the jump. I've noticed that when you let the ball release a bit too early, it will usually hit the back of the rim. While it may look like you are releasing the ball at the perfect time, you are probably releasing it 1/10 of a second too slow. Look for the animation of the shooter and release the ball when the shooter looks like his feet are not moving in the air. Basically the shooter is not moving up, nor moving down, he is frozen in the position of no gravity. This may be hard to describe, but just play with it. It kind of seems like the shooter reaches his peak, but then reaches another peak. When he reaches his other peak, let go of circle. Most shooters will jump in the beginning, and then raise their arms at the end of their jump to perfect their jumper. If this still seems very confusing to you, feel free to e-mail me. It may look like you are releasing the ball a little late, but actually you are releasing it at the perfect time. ------------- Pass ------------- Passing is very easy to complete in this game by simply pressing X. Hold the analog stick to the direction that you want to pass, and the ball will go that way. Always look out for defenders blocking the ball path because balls are quite easy to steal in this game. Make sure that you don't pass balls way upcourt because they are a lot easier to pick off. Usually, just work with simple passes that will not get picked off. Passing may seem a bit difficult in the game when you are playing on Superstar but don't get discouraged. Sooner or later, you will be completing crisp passes. ------------- Dunk/Lay-up ------------- Possibly the best addition to NBA Live 2004 is the Dunk/Lay-up button. To do a dunk/lay-up simply simple press the Square button. If you want to adjust your shot, double tap the square button and your shot will change. Dunking is the easiest way to score, but it takes a lot of skill to get to the basket. Never try to dunk too far out or you player will throw up the ball with one hand straight in the air. Once in a blue moon, your shooter will still make the shot but it is quite dangerous. Remember that a lot of charges get called by trying to dunk or lay-up if the defender has his feet set. Beware but master the dunk button to fully have your A game. ------------- Pro-Hop/Power Dribble ------------- The Pro-Hop/Power Dribble is your best friend in NBA Live 2004. To preform a pro-hop simply press the Triangle button. Tap the triangle button for a power dribble when your the player is standing still. The pro hop is the best way to get to the basket. While running into the paint, simply hit the triangle button to hop around your defender. Many will argue that using the right analog will break defender's ankles, but I find a lot easier using the pro hop to easy lay in the ball. ------------- Turbo ------------- Turbo is essential in all games and this game doesn't differ. To use your turbo, simply press R1. If you are playing with game fatigue on, your players will get a lot more tired if you are using turbo all the time. I use turbo all the time on defense, and also when I have a fast break on offense. It's a great button to always have your finger next to because you never know when you will have that slight opportunity to break down your defender. ------------- Back Down Defender/Protect Ball ------------- To back down your defender simply hold the L1 Button. This is great to use when you are in the paint with a good center of power forward and you want to dunk over your defender. I also use this a lot with my point guards on the three point line. Simply hold down the L1 button so you have your defender playing up against your back. Then simply hit the right analog stick and then use a pro hop and nine out of ten times you will have nice layup. The back down defender button isn't necessary to win games but it will improve your game if you know when and how to use it. ------------- Alley-oop Pass ------------- Only use the alley-oop pass when your teammate has a clear lane to the basket. If you think that you can lay down a nice pass to your teammate simply press the R2 Button. Usually I don't use many alley-oops in close games because they get blocked a lot of times. Also, far too many times I have seen my teammates miss the layups or dunks even when they are wide open. If you are blowing out your friend, hit the highlight real by attempting a few alley-oops. Other than that, I don't recommend using them if you aren't familiarized with them. ------------- Direct Pass ------------- The direct pass ensures that your pass is going to the right guy. See Reggie Miller on the baseline wide open? Ensure that the pass is going to him insteal of Ron Artest by simply holding L2 plus the icon he has over his head. I suggest you use this when you are inbounding the ball so you can make sure that your point guard takes the ball up the court. If you tap L2, you will pass to the closest man to the basket. Remember that by using the direct pass it can still cause turnovers so never force a pass. ------------- Call An Offensive Quick Play ------------- Running an offensive quick play is key to ensure that you can have good opportunities at the basket each time down the court. On offense, simply press the D-button to run the isolation, post up, pick-and-roll, or basket cut. So if you want the pick-and-roll, you would simply press down on the d- button and a guy will run a pick-and-roll for you. I think that this play is the best quick play in the game because it allows you many open lanes to the basket. When I use the Pacers I always use the pick-and-roll to isolate Reggie Miller by himself at the three point line. It's very helpful to get clear looks on the basket, so make sure that you use atleast that quick play. If not, you will have a lot of problems scoring with the pros. ------------- EA Sports Freestyle Control ------------- Every basketball player has his or her own style. EA Sports Freestyle Control lets you express your hoops style with fresh moves, freaky handles, and tough D. When you press the EA Sports Freestyle Control in any direction, your player on the court busts a Freestyle Move. Makign the same shape results in the same move every time. EA Sports Freestyle Control shines on offense, where every player has a unique game. EA Sports Freestyle Control produces moves based on what your player is doing at any point during a game. Different moves are performed depending on which hand your player is using to control the ball. To perform a spin move, press the right analog stick up while your player is running. To perform a cross-over, press the right analog stick sideways towards the ball-handler's opposite hand. EA Sports Freestyle Controls really shine when your player receives the ball in half-court offense (The Triple Threat position). Basically, I use the Freestyle control all the time when I have the ball on offense with my point guard. I never use it with my center or power forward because they will usually get the ball stolen. By using these different moves, you can pass by your defender if you perform the right move. I can't really tell you when to use each move because it varies with each player in the game. Basically, always follow the freestyle control with the Pro-Hop to ensure a quality look on the basket. ------------- Off-Ball Switch ------------- New for NBA Live 2004, you can take control of any offensive player on your team on the court. To enter Off-Ball Switch mode, press and hold the R3 button. To switch to a different player, press and hold R3 + Square, Circle, X, or Triangle. To get your player to set a screen in Off-Ball switch mode, press the L1 button. I rarely use this feature even though it does help a lot. I find it easy enough to score without using this, but this helps a lot when the AI is playing dumb and you see a fast break in the works. ------------- Call Timeout ------------- Calling a timeout are used for two reasons. The main reason to call a timeout is to sub your players in but many people feel that calling a timeout even in videogames has a psychological effect on your gameplay. I rarely call timeouts, but more people than you would expect calls them to slow down the gameplay. ------------- Pause Game ------------- Self explanatory. Pause the game whenever you fee like you need to. ------------- Move Pass Receiver ------------- This move is used to inbound the ball. By using the left analog stick you will control where your player will run to catch the ball. By running around your player, you will make it harder for the defense to steal the ball when you try to inbound it in. Remember the farther you throw the ball, the harder it will be for you to cleanly catch the ball. Also, it will be harder for the ball not to be deflected because it will be thrown through a lot more traffic. Usually when I inbound the ball, I run my gun left and right as close to the guy throwing in the ball. This will make it harder for the defender to pick off the ball. Never try to thread the needle when throwing the ball in because most of the time it will be stolen. ------------- Call for Pass ------------- By using the X button, you will call for the pass. This is simply throwing in the ball to the player that you are controlling at the moment. Remember not to rush any passes because there is always a possibility of losing the ball to your opponent. ------------- Direct Player Switch ------------- The direct player switch is used by pressing L2 plus the square, circle, triangle, or X button. Basically this is to toggle to who you want to throw the pass into so you have more chances of cleanly inbounding the ball. I always pass it to my point guard so he can run the offense up the court. This is very useful to use when you are getting pressed and I highly suggest that you get comfortable with the controls. Also note that to switch to direct pass mode while inbounding, press and hold the L2 Button, then press the button of the inbounding player. You can now use Direct Pass inbounding by pressing and holding the L2 button again. ------------- Strategic Player Switch ------------- Want to send the closest man to the basket? Or how about the best free-throw shooter or the best ball handler? Simply by pressing the D-Button you will be able to switch to one of these guys. This is great when you know that you are going to get intentionally fouled and you want to send your best shooter on the line. Make sure to always do this when you know that you are either going to get fouled, or going to get pressed hard. ------------- Slam Dunk ------------- This can only be used when you are backing down your defender. To back your defender down, press and hold the L1 button. To slam dunk, you need to have the left analog stick toward the basket and then hit the square button when you are close to the basket. This will ensure that you do a slam dunk from the back down. This is dangerous though because if you are going up against a better defender you will usually get blocked. Also, if the defender has his feet set, you will get called for the charge. I don't really recommend using this that much, but it is fun to try out when you are ahead. ------------- Fade Away Jumper ------------- This can only be used when you are backing down your defender. To back your defender down, press and hold the L1 button. To pull off a fade away jumper have the left analog stick away from the basket and press the Circle button. This is very useful when you have a man in your face and you don't want to get swatted. When the shot clock is winding down and you don't have any chance to pass the ball to an open guy, use the fade away to ensure that you at least hit the rim. The chances of making a fade away are lower than a regular jump shot, but there is still a good chance if you release the ball at the perfect time. ------------- Power Dribble ------------- This can only be used when you are backing down your defender. To back your defender down, press and hold the L1 button. The Pro-Hop/Power Dribble is your best friend in NBA Live 2004. ------------- Spin Move ------------- This can only be used when you are backing down your defender. To back your defender down, press and hold the L1 button. To perform a spin move have the left analog stick in the direction you want to spoin and release the L1 Button. This is a good way to break down your defender but if you are using a big guy, you may pick up the charge a lot more than you would expect. Be careful with this move, but use it once or twice in the game when you need a basket in the paint. ------------- Make Computer Shoot ------------- This is used when you are in player lock mode. To make the computer ball handler shoot simply press the circle or square button. I never use this because I personally don't like the idea of the whole player lock mode. This would be used if you are having the computer control one player and you think that they have an open shot. ------------- Call For Pass From Computer ------------- This is used when you are in player lock mode. To make the computer pass you the ball simply hit the X button. I never use this because I personally don't like the idea of the whole player lock mode. This would be used if you feel that the computer should pass the ball to another team member. ------------- Call For Dunk/Lay-Up ------------- This is used when you are in player lock mode. To call for a dunk/lay-up simply press the Square Button. I never use this because I personally don't like the idea of the whole player lock mode. This would be use when you are below the basket and you want to dunk. ------------- Set Screen ------------- This is used when you are in player lock mode. To call for a screen simply press the L1 Button plus the left analog stick. I never use this because I personally don't like the idea of the whole player lock mode. This would be use when you want to set a screen for the computer. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Perfecting Control - Defensive ------------------------------------------------------------------ Now that you know all the controls in the game, each control can be used to your advantage if you know how to use it. Here I have listed how each defensive control works with a simple but helpful tutorial of how to use it. ------------- Move Player ------------- Moving the player is quite easy. Simply move around the left analog stick to move your player in the corresponding direction as you are moving the analog. Make sure that when you are using the analog not to let it slip off your finger when you are next to the out of bounds area. By doing this, you will let the ball handler run around you. It's not hard to defend the guy if you stay in front of the man all the time. ------------- Switch Player ------------- To switch players simply press the X button. When I am on defense I always let the computer guard their respected guy and then I come over with my shooting guard or my point guard and I double team. This is very dangerous to do because it always leaves a man open but I think that the benefits outweigh the risks. Usually I can get about 4-6 steals in 2 minute quarters playing on Superstar. This isn't hard but you need to know how to switch your players. When the ball is passed, switch the player so you are now the guy closest to the ball. If you let the computer guard for you, you will get torn up against good players. ------------- Steal ------------- Stealing is my favorite move in NBA Live 2004. To steal simply press the square button. I am always hitting the square button when my opponent is dribbling the ball up the court. A few times during the game you will get called for reaching in but it is totally worth it. By hitting the steal button all the time, you will get numerous steals throughout the game. When stealing, try to be lined up with the ball on either your left or right side. If the ball is on your left side, run over to the left so you have a clean shot of hitting the ball out of the defenders hand. If the ball in on your right side, do the opposite. I find it a lot easier to steal the ball this way. Also, make sure that you never run behind the defender because then he will have a clear shot to the basket. Always use the steal button everytime on defense, it is by far the best defensive move in the game. ------------- Take A Charge ------------- To take a charge simply press the Circle button or the R2 button during the game. This will stand your defender straight up with his hands crossed over his crotch. This move is very dangerous to use because if you don't get the charge, the defender will have a straight lane to the basket. Also by using this move it doesn't totally ensure that you won't get called for a foul. I rather try to pack the guy each time he's going up for a basket rather than to try to take a charge. The best time to take a charge is when you are playing against another human controlled player. When he or she is using the right analog freestyle control, get right in the middle of him and hit the circle button. This is the best time when you will draw the charge. The charge is a good move to master, but isn't always the best move to use in the game. ------------- Jump to Block/Rebound ------------- To block or rebound simply press the Triangle Button. When blocking, make sure you jump right right after the shooter jumps. If you jump too early, the shooter will have a clear shot at the hoop. If you jump too late, you won't be able to pack the shooter. Simply hit the triangle button right when you anticipate the jump. If you see the shooter pulling back to take the shot, you are too late. When blocking, make sure that you don't lean to far in or you will get called for the foul. For rebounding, make sure that you don't jump too early when you are trying to go for the board. I find many people jumping right when the ball hits the rim and that is way too early. When you see the ball going down to the floor, then jump. Too many times you will jump and hit the floor before the ball even finishes bouncing off the hoop. Also when rebounding, make sure you box out. Rebounding can be done even with the smallest guys if you have the right timing. Remember, it's better to jump late than early! ------------- Turbo ------------- Turbo is essential in all games and this game doesn't differ. To use your turbo, simply press R1. If you are playing with game fatigue on, your players will get a lot more tired if you are using turbo all the time. I use turbo all the time on defense when I am trying to steal the ball. Also, if I need to catch up to the ball handler, I use turbo to get there faster. Always have your finger on the turbo button when you are in these situations. ------------- Direct Player Switch ------------- The direct player switch is used by pressing L2 plus the square, circle, triangle, or X button. Basically this is to toggle to who you want to use to defend. I never really use the direct player switch on defense because I find it too long to switch players. ------------- Switch To Last Man Back ------------- To switch to the last man back tap the L2 Button. This would be use to control the guy that is closest to the basket. Personally i like to press all the time, so I don't that this is necessary to use. ------------- Intentional Foul ------------- Down with little time left? Hit the select button to intentional foul. This move works the best when trying to get your opponents on the line as fast as possible. When your opponent is inbounding the ball, hit the Select button before they throw it in. This will cause your players to automatically foul the guy with the ball. Also, if you are lucky, sometimes they will steal the ball instead of fouling the guy. This is key to use in situations where you need to stop the clock. Also, on fast breaks, try to intentional foul the guy before he makes it to the hoop. It's a cheap move, but it's better than giving up the easy two. ------------- Call A Defensive Quick Play ------------- Running an defensive quick play is key to ensure that you can have good opportunities to stop the offense from scoring. On defense, simply press the D-button to run Man to Man, Zone, Double Team, and Full Court Press. So if you want the Full Court Press, you would simply press down on the d-button. I usually don't use the man to man or the zone because I just let my defense run its normal style of defense. I never use the double team because I find it easier just to control a guy off the ball and run him over to help the defender. I use the full court press when I am trying to steal the ball on an inbound. Though these defensive quick plays aren't as good as the offensive quick plays, they can be pulled out of the hat for a good stop once in awhile. Don't abuse them because they won't help that much, but don't forget about them. EA Sports Freestyle Control shines on offense but it also helps on defense. While your player has the fewer Freestyle moves on defense, they can be very effective in stopping your opponent. Take time to master the Freestlye moves for defense. Basically, I use different combinations of the freestyle moves on defense once in a while to stop my opponent from scoring, but I find them a lot easier to use while on offense. ------------- Pause Game ------------- Self explanatory. Pause the game whenever you fee like you need to. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Game Modes ------------------------------------------------------------------ There are a ton of modes of play that you can play with in NBA Live 2004. Here I have listed all the modes of play with a description of each one. ------------- Play Online ------------- Want to take your game online and prove to the world you are the best? Well, here's the place to do it. Go online and ball it up against the best online. ------------- Season ------------- Play in a season and see if you can win the ring. ------------- Dynasty Mode ------------- Take your team through many years of basketball. Take a team from the bottom and bring them to the top by getting the hottest prospects, rushing your guys through training camp, and making some good trades along the way. ------------- Playoffs ------------- Cut the season out and go directly the Playoffs. Goodluck in winning your ring! ------------- 1 on 1 ------------- Don't like to be a team player? Then play one on one with any player you would like to ball against. ------------- Individual Practice ------------- Don't like how your jumper is looking? Hit the gym and practice. Remember practice makes perfect. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Dynasty Mode ------------------------------------------------------------------ This section of the guide is dedicated totally to the Dynasty Mode. Here I have broken down the Dynasty mode as much as possible and have given all my help that I can possibly give. If you have any additional questions, feel free to e-mail me at: fanbaseballdrew@aol.com. You can build a Dynasty from the ground up and then manage it over several seasons. Starting from your first Training Camp, you can hire specialist coaches to improve individual and team abilities and then see the results from season to season. First select your team that you want to build your dynasty with. Then select you from these options. ------------- Season Length ------------- Play 28, 56, or 82 games in your season. ------------- Schedule Type ------------- When set to NBA, the season schedule is set based on the real 2003-2004 NBA seasons. ------------- SIM Quarter Length ------------- Set the simulated quarter length from 2 to 12 minutes. ------------- Playoff Length ------------- Set the Playoff Format. The default is 7 games in each series. ------------- Simulation Injuries ------------- When set to YES, injuries can occur in simulated games. ------------- Injury Notify ------------- When set to YES, you are notified of injuries to your players. ------------- CPU Initiated Trades ------------- When set to YES, the computer makes trade offers to the user. ------------- Fantasy Draft ------------- When set to YES, teams create custom rosters by drafing players from the pool of active NBA players. ------------- GM Evaluation ------------- When set to YES, you are judged on your performance as the GM of your franchise. Once your finish with these options, you are now at your Pre-Season Training Camp. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Training Camp ------------------------------------------------------------------ In Training Camp, you can improve your players' abilities before the season starts. To begin Training Camp, press the d-button up/down to highlight Enter Training Camp. Press the X button. After the training camp is overm you can view the results. To see the results for the player in a different category, press the D-button sideways. To check out a different player, press the circle button. Then, press the D-button Up/Down to highlight a different player. To start off, you will have 100 training time. You have four different categories that you can improve on. Shooting Training on shooting will affect a player's fied goal, 3 pointers, free throw, and inside scoring ratings. Defense Training on defense will affect a player's block, steal, defensive rebound and defensive awareness ratings. Offense Training on offense will affect a player's pass, dribble, offensive rebound and offensive awareness ratings. Conditioning Training on conditioning will affect a player's strength, speed, quickness, jumping and stamina ratings. If you use all your time on one category, you will lose points on other categories because your players need to still practice the skills they already know. This is what makes it hard for training camp. If you feel like you need a bit better shooting, set it to 35. Then set your defense to 20, your offense to 25, and your conditioning to 20. This usually won't lose you any points in any of the categories and may actually improve your shooting by a few points. Also, if you don't want to do the training camp, simply quit it or have the computer simulate it. The thing with this traning camp is that it doesn't take long at all to complete. You don't do anything, you just watch your players practice. Once you are completely done with the Training Camp, you will move on to the Dynasty Central Screen. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Dynasty Central ------------------------------------------------------------------ This is where you will make all your dynasty changes throughout the year. Here are all your options. ------------- Next Game ------------- This will take you to your next game. ------------- Schedule ------------- Who are you playing next? Check here to find out and also look back at your scores of past games. ------------- Dynasty Development ------------- By selecting Dynasty Development you will then move on to Training Session or Dynasty Extras. At Training Session, you can begin Individual Training Session or Team Traning Sesson. The Individual Training Session costs 800 while the Team Training Session costs 200. The other option, Dynasty Extras works on hiring coaches. Basically, this is where you can hire coaches to work on specific aspects of your team's development. You need to earn dynasty points to use both options though. Dynasty points are awarded for accomplishing feats in the task list displayed after each game, season, and playoff. Here is a list of the Dynasty Extras. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 Game Dynasty Options ------------------------------------------------------------------ These ratings only stay with you for one game. Shot Control: Toggle from either user or CPU. Camera View: Toggle the camera view from baseline low, press box, baseline high, center court, and sideline. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 on 1 Personal Strategy ------------------------------------------------------------------ Playing 1 on 1 can take a lot of skill but I think it is a little too easy to win even on Superstar. Though there isn't much strategy involved on one on one, I am going to try to help you guys as much as possible. First off for starters, make sure that you pick someone who can take it into the post pretty good. If you use someone who can only shoot threes, I think that you will have some problem down the stretch because you won't be able to shake off the defender. The easiest way to score on offense is very simple. First off, run to the right of the court on a 45 degree angle. While running, use the right analog to do some crossovers. Then, turn the analog stick to the right and pro hop to the basket. Lay it in real fast and the defender won't be able to jump until after the basket ball is at it's peak. This is great because the worse thing that can happen is that you miss the shot. You won't get packed because if the defender touches the ball he will be called for goaltending. Also, don't be afraid to back up your defender by backing him down. If you are using a good post up player like Tim Duncan, you can easily back up your opponent and then just lob a little shot over his head. Works like a charm. On defense, just shuffle your feet and get in the front of the ball as much as you can. Always hit the steal button and make sure that you time your rebounds perfectly. If you are having trouble or need more help, look at the Perfecting Control - Offensive and Perfecting Control - Defensive sections of this guide. Those will help the most at fixing up your game. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 11. Practice Mode ------------------------------------------------------------------ Need a bit of help on your jumpers? Well, then go to the practice mode. Make sure you also practice the EA Sports Freestyle Control moves in Individual Practice. To practice follow these simple steps: 1. Press the start button to advance to the select controller screen. After you reach the screen, you will be asked to pick your jersey. After that, you will be either to ask to Play or hit the Preferences. If you play, you will go automatically to practice. If you hit Preferences, you will be able to change the audio mode from Dolby Surround, Mono Stereo and also be able to change the Menu Music Volume, Boom Box Volume, and the Sound F/X Volume. While in practice mode, you can practice shooting and dribbling. It's a nice play to shoot around for fun and pull off spectacular dunks. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 12. EA Sports Freestyle ------------------------------------------------------------------ EA Sports Freestyle shows demonstrations about every aspect of the game. Here I have described each tutorial for you. Every basketball player has his or her own style. While your player has fewer freestyle moves on defense, they can be very effective in stopping your opponent. Take time to master the Freestyle moves for defense. ------------- Dribble Moves ------------- Basically Marv Albert breaks it down into two types of dribbling moves. There are dribbling moves on the run and also when you are stopped with the ball. Both of these moves are pulled off by using the right analog stick with the left analog stick. Find a crossover that you like, and you'll be unstoppable. ------------- Shooting Control ------------- Shooting is now broken down to the dunk/lay-up button and the jump shot button. Each of these positions matter a lot. They recommend trying to use the jump stop with the layup button to get a good look on the basket. ------------- Triple Threat ------------- This is for perimeters plays. Hold the ball behind your back by holding the right analog stick down, and then moving the left analog stick left to right. You can also jump step and protect the ball with the ball behind your back. ------------- Off-Ball Play ------------- A new feature is the ability to control a player without the ball. This helps for backdoor shots and pick and rolls. You can use this by using the R3 Button. This allows you to use your speed and team to get better shots at the basket. By moving the right analog stick up you can use special moves to get yourself open. ------------- Post Play ------------- The easiest ways to score are downlow. If you get the right analog stick down in the post, you can do a fake by rotating the stick right or left. This can get easy shots off due to juking out your opponent by using your feet. ------------- Freestyle Air ------------- When you drive to the basket, you will rarely get an uncontested layup. Freestyle control lets you adjust your shot in mid air so you won't get packed as much. This also helps you adjust your jump shot, which can give you better looks at the basket. ------------- Defense ------------- You can use freestyle to play defense in NBA Live 2004. You can try to steal the ball by moving the right analog stick right or left. Also, you can contest the shot by moving the analog up or set your feet by pressing the analog stick down. This really will help out your defense. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 14. EA SPORTS BIO is a new feature desgined to reward you for playing EA SPORTS titles. Your EA SPORTS Bio, a file shared between EA SPORTS games via your memory card, is a summary that tracks key accomplishments and time spent playing different titles in the EA SPORTS lineup. The first time you select EA SPORTS BIO from the My NBA LIVE screen, with a a memory ccard in MEMORY CARD slot 1, you are prompted to create an EA SPORTS Bio. You are also prompted when you complete accomplishments or reach a new gamer level. EA Sports Gamers Levels: When you first create your EA SPORTS Bio, you start out as a Level 1 gamer. There are multiple ways that you can earn credit toward a promotion to the next level. Every EA SPORTS title that you add to your EA SPORTS resume gets your more credit twoward the next gamer level. Play more products, earn a higher level rating - it's as easy at that. Game Time: And you thought you'd never get recognized or rewarded for all the time you put in on EA SPORTS titles. Finally you get rewarded for all your loyalty and devotion to EA SPORTS. Does it get any better than this? THe more time you put in, the faster you rise to the next level. Number Of Games Played: Every game you play and complete gives you credit toward the next level. In addition, winning games give you additional bonus points on the level you achieve. Rewards: When you reach a new level, you may unlock a game-specific reward. Some rewards are bigger than others; it all depends on the level you achieve. A level increase potentially unlocks rewards for all EA SPORTS titles in your Bio, regardless of which title the level was achieved while playing. Accomplishments: In each EA SPORTS game, there are certain accomplishments that you can achieve. These accomplishments vary by title. When you achieve an accomplishment, a prompt appears asking if you want to save this accomplishment to your EA SPORTS Bio. Major Accomplishments: This lists shows the five highest-ranking accomplishments. Recent Accomplishments: This list shows the most recent accomplishments, sorted by date. Note: NBA LIVE 2004 only supports the EA SPORTS Bio in MEMORY CARD slot 1 and 1-A. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 24: Task List ------------------------------------------------------------------ To unlock points, you need to do what the Task List says.
