|Well the 3rd installment in the Dead Space universe has come to our systems for our glorious enjoyment of killing necromorphs again. Now its been some time I thought it proper to do my review on it.
Story: The game starts on Tau Volantis, an ice-covered planet. Where you take control Private Tim Kaufman. Where you are attempting to retrieve a mysterious object called the Codex for Dr. Earl Serrano. Now I have to say when I first seen this bit I was like um.... Where is Isac. But do not fear. We keep going. After finding the codex you soon find yourself in a camp/military base where you meet General Mahad, your commanding officer. Mahad, being the only other survivor, executes you (Kaufman) then purges the Codex data and commits suicide. Now we shoot two hundred years later. The is year 2514, Isaac Clarke and Ellie Langford have become romantically involved and are now separated which made me feel rather sad for Isac again. Now you are in your apartment which is located on the moon. Ah to think of living on the moon. But anyway I digress.
Captain Robert Norton and Sergeant John Carver come to get Isac (you) and explain they are the last battalion of EarthGov, and they require Isaac's help to find Ellie and her missing team. You are now running from and battling your way through Unitologist soldiers. Now during your escape Unitologist contingent Jacob Danik activates a Marker near the colony, causing another Necromorph outbreak. Isaac, Carver, and Norton use this outbreak to their advantage, managing to escape aboard the USM Eudora and from there you try to track Ellie and her missing team down. While of course fighting the Unitologist soldiers and the necromorphs. I will leave it there for the story. I can certainly say. I enjoyed it and loved finding out more along with some other interesting tidbits.
Game Play: The game pits Isaac (you) against the Necromorphs, human corpses reanimated by the signal of an alien artifact known as the Marker. The Resource Integration Gear (RIG) suit returns, using holographic displays projected from the players' suit and weapons to display health and ammo count, respectively. In vacuum areas, a timer will appear on the player's right shoulder, indicating how much oxygen that character has left before they suffocate. Now Isaac and Carver can roll and take cover to avoid attacks. Some would say these features take away from the Dead space 3 game style. But I feel it added that extra if you wished to use it. But then again I say its always nice to be able to take cover if there is to much fire.
Aside from the returning Necromorphs, Dead Space 3 features a large cast of new enemies. One example is the Waster, whose attacks change depending on how it is dismembered; while another is the Nexus, an insect-like giant that can crush or swallow people whole. There is more obstacles which include a new human enemy, Unitologist soldiers and environmental hazards like falling machinery and a giant mining drill. I will say that bit it got me going crazy with excitement. Thats all I will say on that.
Now the new upgrade system which was redesigned as a "tool construction system" (The Bench). Now I liked this very much. This is where you can make items and weapons. You can design your weapons on your own or use blueprints found in the game. Resources can be found all over the Dead Space 3 environment which will allow you to upgrade your suit at the suit kiosk or upgrade your weapon at the bench. There is also a little scavenger bot you can get to help find resources for you. Now a little side note. I named my little bot Bob. Now that you have another useless bit of info from my lovely mind of naming things. The game play is just great another good notch on the board. We shall move on.
Controls: They are easy to master nothing to fancy to work out. Good simple controls. Just how I like them. Moving on.
The Graphics: What can I say. Love them the detail to me looked marvelous. But no doubt others would say different. But to me they certainly added to the love for the game. I could not really see a fault in them at all. Then again I am not an ultra graphic's person.
Music: Now as most know I tend not to listen to game music. But lately I have been making myself listen more and noticing the added enjoyment it gives. Now to me the music works well with the game it certainly does give it that little extra kick even in the fighting scenes. Which I did enjoy with Isac's heart pounding and mine to. Another game with good music.
Bugs and Glitches: Now we come to a bit I have to say is one bit that does get my blood boiling. Big companies should not be releasing a game with game breaking bugs or Glitches. Now I found several fall through the world glitches and necromorphs stuck in objects. Also where bosses refuse from being killed where they should. e.g. the snow monster spider creature. (If you have that bug you can find the fix in my blog). Now some bugs can be forgiven and fixed in a patch but ones where you need to do something drastic to get by them is just not on!
Reply Value: Well it is there but I would only say if you're going to be playing them all in a row again or if they are bringing out a fourth Dead space and you wish to reacquaint yourself with all the story from start to finish.
Overall: Story another great installment, Game play a new direction but a nice change. Simple controls as always. Graphics just marvelous. Music does the game justice. Sadly some bugs that just should not be there! Reply value is there but like I said not to just play right after completing. So my overall score for this 3rd installment of Dead Space is. Eight paws out of ten.
