I'm quite indecisive here on whether I should purchase a Macbook pro or a laptop. I've been a windows user for pretty much all my high school life and since I'll be in university next year, I'm going to have to need a new laptop or macbook. I'm looking for something that's great at illustration and designing. I know a lot of people tell me straight away that I should get a macbook, but why? Is there a huge difference between that and a standard laptop? Laptops are far more cheaper now and some top notch ones cost only 900 bucks.

laptop most definitely. quite sometime ago i did buy a mac book..its HDD kept crashing and finally when someone from apple bothered to take a look they replaced it with a new one(i think) which promptly crashed again after a week or so. i got really fed up with it. so went back to a laptop.

Let me just say this, laptop for the win because not only are they faster, but they are easier to use and most of all they have been around much longer than macbooks. Yes, I've used many macbooks but the thing I don't like about them is the single clicker, it just downright annoys the hell out of me.

So, my HP laptop is my big like rather than macbook

Apple has advertised the Mac as an artsy computer, which is why people suggest it when you mention illustration and designing. It is by no means naturally better at these things than any other computer.

A tablet PC could work (depending on the kind of illustration you're doing), and a laptop or Mac will also work fine. Macs tend to be pricey, though, so I'd recommend a laptop over one.

A lot of universities in the design field tend to have Macs rather than PCs. Since you've been a windows user for a while, perhaps you should change to a mac and learn how to get used to it.

I've been thinking about this for the whole day yesterday and I'm just wondering, is it even necessary to have a laptop/macbook if you're doing a design and illustration course in uni? I have a PC at home and it's got photoshop and all of the things I pretty much need. It's also quite new and runs smoothly.

Do you think I need a laptop at all?

If not, then I was thinkin of purchasing an iPad instead. It's way more cheaper and has internet lol

most things apple r overhyped and need to be approached with a bit of caution..except for the iPod ofcourse. so if the ipad gets u going..go for it. but i'd still recommend the laptop..if u're going for one.
