My history teacher is going to tell us about this but I would just like to know, why is it that when soldiers came back from the Vietnam war they were hated by the public? I may be wrong about this but thats what i thought happened

There are multiple reasons, but most people basically didn't support the Vietnam war. Many people in the U.S. were against it, and most of these people were hippies, who were very much opposed to war in general.
According to Yahoo Answers it was because Vietnam was the first television war. It was the first time civilians saw the things that soldiers did in war. Before that they supported the end result (America winning) but had never seen what needs to be done to get to that end result, when they saw what really happens in war they were I guess you could say disgusted.

The reports of soldiers being spat on are vastly over-reported.
It happened, but only in isolated cases.
When my dad got back from Vietnam, no one cared.

I think its sad that stuff like this happened to our fighting men after the war. Some of them didn't even want to be there but were drafted and had no choice.

Also, people had heard reports of a few isolated cases of soldiers butchering entire villages, men, women, children, babies, and livestock/animals.
These isolated cases were then used against the entirety of the U.S. forces, which was one of the main reasons the American people harbored an irrational hatred for the brave Men and Women whom risked their lives to conquer an impoverished third-world country.
The American people had no idea of the stresses that came with being a soldier. Vietcong used guerrilla warfare, hit and run and disappear tactics since they clearly lacked the numbers to have an open conflict, plus they had intimate knowledge of the area's jungle, and used it to advantage.
Not to mention the various tunnels, and the deadly trickery used in making dummy tunnels that had traps involving spike-pits, wires that could decapitate a man, various venomous spiders and creatures, and more, that it's a wonder any tunnel rats survived the war.
Also, America used Agent Orange, which is a toxic substance meant to kill plants, but also has adverse effects on the human body.
Napalm as well.

u're right. they had no choice..they were soldiers..they were following orders. people were wrong to hate them..if they wanted to hate someone they should've hated the politicians. it was their decision.
