In reality? I'd go with a m1911a .45 gas powered semi-automatic pistol. Probably one of the best guns I've ever handled, but the only downside is the low ammo capacity.
In fantasy, I'd go with a customized semi-automatic m107 .50 caliber sniper rifle. It's in development yet, I think, because I think it's not possible to fire .50 caliber bullets at a semi-automatic rate.

The 1911 is short-recoil operated. Almost all pistols are short-recoil or blowback operated. I can't think of a single traditional gas-operated pistol.
I keep one next to my bed. Not because I'm paranoid, but because I wish I was.

Isn't the Desert Eagle gas operated?

Looked it up and yes it is.
The problem with traditional gas operation is size constraints, which the Desert Eagle isn't necessarily limited by.
Colt got around this by inventing blowback, which uses gas--but to eject the cartridge rather than to move the bolt; using a hammerless design usually.

Says so in wiki... But I do not trust it!
