Also Ryuk killed him because the first few episodes he says to Light that he will write down his name in his notebook at one point.
I actually don't know which one I like more. They were both extremely clever. Although I do think that the anime took a turn for the worse when L died, it just lost something which Near nor Mello could achieve.
I find the lack of spoiler warning disturbing.
I tried to put the spoilers, but i don't think anybody cared about it.

I would suggest you re-evaluate the "anybody cared about it" part really fast.
L did. didn't u remember? he burned it and put in boxes and heard sounds of people screaming.
No he didn't. And if he did light wouldn't have to end up being shot. He failed in the end only because the second Notebook was at N's hands.
hm... u must have read the manga. he burnt it in the movie.

Well i think the main part is the series so i didn't watch or read the other stuff.
@Neo: Can you think of anything better?

I didn't watch the second movie fully, so he might have burnt it but he didn't in the anime.
@DABhand watch the anime it's much more better than the movies. Also death gods are stupid.
******SPOILER**************
I dunno Ryuk got the last laugh in the 2nd movie :P
