I haven't actually played online and I'm sorry if this is a really stupid question. But you did have AP round selected and not HE right?

Using AP rounds doesn't guarantee a kill. Were you hitting him only on the front? It's almost impossible to take down a Panther except from behind.

Nope, there are no hacks: it's plain and simply. German frontal armour is almost impossible to penetrate most of the time, also you should be using Direct-Fire to pick out the targets on the vehicle you can ACTUALLY PENETRATE. (Red = Not possible, Yellow = Slight chance, Green = next to sure)
This way you can scan the vehicle for weak points... then again, you could always have flanked it (which shouldn't be hard with 10 KV 85's) and fire at it's rear.

I second Protocal's comment, the best way to destroy any tank giving you grief is direct control.
My advice would be to always make your first AP round into the tracks, this causes the vehicle to become immobile, and swerve off in a random direction. You can then flank the offending tank and destroy it's rear quite easily. This is especially useful against tank destroyers that typically can only shoot in a 90 degree arc from the front without having to turn first (which they cannot do without tracks) so you can flank and destroy them unscathed if you avoid the firing arc. It also works well against slow turning turreted vehicles like the tiger, as you can frequently flank the immobilised tiger before it turns it's turret to face you
This tactic is much easier if you work your anti-tank routines with two or more units, either two tanks, or a tank and an AT equiped infantry squad. The heaviest unit you use to remove the enemy tanks tracks and act as a distraction whilst the second, possibly lighter, unit flanks it and destroys the offending tanks engine
In you're case you have 10 tanks to play with so it should be 5 times more easy to do the above
