What is the best way to assault castles?

I assaulted my first castle (in the swamp)last night, and darn near got my butt handed to me. Up until then it was ho hum another battle.

I had approx 250 peasants (all but worthless IMO) 100 inquesters, 50 priests, and 75 or so swordsmen, and around 50-75 Archers.

Normally this is more then enough to wipe out the enemy in a max of 2 turns.

I would suggest getting some griffins. I think you can get them in the first castle in the Eastern part of Darion. They have the ability to reposte to all direct attacks. I found them quite handy at the beginning of the game because they have good hit points and decent attack. Use them to replace the peasants (I agree with your assessment).

Well Then I'll tell you now issuing more durable units as well as siege units can really help in the midst of an attack abroad a castle, griffins work very well to, harrasing the crap out of light units and mid-tier units
