No thanks to the entirety of the net, I might add. Luckily I figured this crap out on my own.

The problem is with the 'Games for Windows - Live' system that KnL uses for its savegames.

Here's what you need to do:

Install the files for the savegame you downloaded as normal, into the directory the readme.txt tells you to (i.e. the game folder under "Application Data" ). That much is correct. The tricky part that no one bothers to tell you is what you have to do when you actually start up the game.

When you get to the opening screen of KnL where it says "press any key to continue", immediately press the 'Home' key on your keyboard. This brings down the 'Games for Windows' menu.

First, you need to SIGN OUT of your current player profile (it'll also be a good idea to disable the option that signs you in automatically everytime KnL starts up). Then press 'Home' again to exit the menu.

Now, follow the direction on screen and "press any key to continue". The game will ask you to sign into a 'Games for Windows' profile. Choose "sign in with a different account". It will ask you for a product key. Click 'submit' without actually entering any code.

After doing that, the Games for Windows menu will suddenly close and the game itself will abruptly tell you that it has found a savegame and loaded it -- that savegame being the all-access savegame you installed. Now you can go into the game and access any chapter you wanna play.

Yeah, I know, this convoluted workaround doesn't make a lot of sense. But it works.
