You must download the mod kit, create a mod and edit the files associated with your mod. They will be in text format. The files that come with the game are encoded in a binary format to allow them to load faster. Expect a game start delay when using your mod.

I tried some other things, like replacing the gameinfo files, completely, and it wont even load the game, so i am going to look around and see what else to do......

Do people actually make mods for other reasons than editing cap. ship limits? Like adding newer gameplay features? This doesn't mean I don't like the current gamemode, I'm just curious.

yes you can mod other things into the game. Once the full tools are released you will prob find a star wars mod out, babylon 5, etc etc. There are already mods out enhancing each faction, stronger or weaker pirates and such.

you can mod your own cheat where everything costs 1 cred and no materials or up the costs of everything so you use more tatics instead of just numbers.

Over on the stardock forums, someone posted a capital ship mod that makes all the races' capital ships more powerful, and I think also gives cap ships to the pirates, among other things.

The mod tools (and game itself) have only been out for a short time, so more elaborate mods will probably take some time to appear. But the tools allow for extensive modification of things far beyond the number of capital ships you can have.
