you can upgrade them by getting the rats tail( i do not remember how i think you go to a dungeon near ilands that have holes) then talk to the lord of the dragons then you get upgraded. there is no time exact but i say you should do it when you have the air ship.

omg im stuck on the 2nd emperor!!! plz help! my characters r not weak most my guys hve at least 1 lvl 10 spell plz help omg its annoying!!

What do you mean by the second emperor? And I beat them all with lvl 6 blizzards.
