This is the first installment of this new video game franchise to hit the PS2. ‘Evil Dead: Hail to the King’ before it on the PSX had a definite link to the style of the first two films in terms of settings, atmosphere and circumstances. It was very gritty as well.
It misfired in the game play department as well as the character rendering area, though.
This sequel, or perhaps alternate reality, to the movies plays and looks much more like the cartoon style of ‘Army Of Darkness’, the 3rd in the Evil Dead trilogy. This game has great gore and buckets of blood with fine, if stiff, graphics (and a bit too ‘clean’ looking) and the trademark one liners from Bruce Campbell himself. It is a really fun game to play, even if the story is a departure from the Evil Dead timeline. It has great deadite pounding combos and weapons to boot.
It would have benefited from more grit and atmosphere like its predecessor. All they need to do is blend Hail to the King’s mood and atmosphere with Boomstick’s game play and the next one is a sure hit.
