I have a gaming laptop but I use it like a desktop with a full sized gaming keyboard plugged into one of the available USB ports on the side of the laptop and an HDMI cable running from my laptop to my big screen TV in my living room.
Maybe buy a separate keyboard to use if your laptop keyboard is messed up? You can get a decent keyboard for under $25 USD.
Try searching for "Sticky keys" under search and make sure your mom didn't assign F1 to a sticky key in Windows. Disable all sticky keys either way. They are nothing but trouble for gamers, especially in games that have lots of options and require lots of keyboard combinations. The Shift key is used in lots of games, usually for allowing your character to run/sprint and Windows sticky keys pops up if the shift key is pressed like 5 times in a row. So annoying but easy to disable under Windows Sticky Keys. Just click on Start and Search for Sticky Keys.
