Okay. I'm at the end of Chapter 1 and I've killed the Tripod. I've got the new directions from Issac's mysterious benefactor, and can see the route. But the door to the vehicle maintenance bay remains locked. I've tried shooting out the windows around the room, throwing the body of the dead tripod at it, shooting at the door, all to no avail. What's going on? Did I miss something on my way here, or is this a glitch? Anyone have any ideas?

Didn't I just see you trying to kill a Reaper in ME-3? You gave up and now you're stuck in DS2.

Well, I think from where you are you leave via a maintenance duct. Here's a video that might help.

Yes, you did. I traded several games to a friend for some of mine that I'd finished. When I get stuck on one, I switch to another and play that one until I either finish it, reach an impasse on that one (or get bored of it).

And yes, this is indeed where I'm at in this game. But where the door in the clip you show has a blue "open" symbol on it, the one in my game shows an amber "locked" symbol. Until I figure out why that is, I can go no further. As far as I know, this isn't a shareware version of the game. I did run out of time and the facility went into lock-down, but I don't know if that was part of the game or just because I'm slow.

I've talked to two other players and read every forum I could find anywhere the last two hours but I cant find anything exactly like you're reporting.

That's called a 'GRIP' panel and when enabled should look like this: [url]deadspace.wikia.com/wiki/Kinesis_Module?file=GRIP_closeup.JPG'>Link

We play the Steam version of DS2 and I'm not sure of the source for the games you're exchanging with friends. I did see someone report a possible "Kinesis Bug" but did not see it validated or a solve offered.

Here are the exact instructions for finishing Chapter One:

After Daina fills you in about your three missing years and raises your hopes
about a cure, follow the objective path into the “Vehicle Maintenance Bay”
workshop, grabbing every item along the way. The path will lead you to a
maintenance duct. Use kinesis on the distinctive blue “grip enabled” symbol to
expose the portal. This symbol will be present whenever environmental obstacles
or routes can be manipulated with kinesis.

Some other possibly relevant things you might try:

You mentioned a 'Lockdown' and a timer. If you took a fairly long time killing the Tripod and getting to the duct, reload and try to get to the panel sooner. Maybe then it will be Blue.

Put the game on Easy Difficulty.

    Enable VSync and Triple Buffering.

You should have found a Power Module - try upgrading your RIG.

Generally, either restart the level or reinstall the game and try again.

That's about all I could find or remember. It's been a lot of years since I played the series but I thought all the Dead Space games were fantastic. All of this has gotten me interested in possibly playing both the Dead Space and the Mass Effect games again. Good luck.
