Any suggestions for creating best ships. I have found destroyer in Devries Shipyard and a dreadnought class.

Any other places--ship yards?

Also I have had trouble having them follow me to different sectors and thru gates.

Any recommendations how to staff them, the destroyer comes with a Captain and pilot I think

There's a few good mods.
UFO and ManualCommandExtension will however most likely fit this specific need.
