I have both the Retail version and the Steam version of Batman: Arkham City. I bought the Steam version yesterday when they had it on sale. For some reason whenever I try to play the Retail version an error message pops up. It says unable to connect to an active Steam client. Please make sure that Steam is running.

Is there a way to fix this problem or is my retail version of Arkham City screwed?

don't mind me asking but why do you have both, steam and retail? Since the steam version works, why have a retail?

Because he is trying to play both copies on the one install which doesn't work.

If you have it via Steam, when installed Steam will stick registry items for the game in the registry, so when you click on a link to start the game it knows it needs to go through steam.

If you try with a retail copy with the steam copy installed, without installing and hitting play it will want to go through steam cause that is what it is set at, and if steam isn't running then it won't start and give you that error message.

In short you can't install both a retail copy and digital copy at the same time.

I uninstalled the retail copy and will just play the Steam version.

@fullmetal5550 - I am also curious why you would purchase two copies of the PC version... I can almost understand one for your PC and one for your console, but two for one platform seems a bit redundant.
That is the smartest thing I have ever heard anyone say about anything.

I bought the retail version when it was released back in November. When Steam had their summer sale I decided to buy the Steam version in case anything happened to my retail version.
