Hey I'm planning on buying a new server box but i havnt kept up with hardware in the past year or so and im hoping some of the tech crowed like neo and the cat dude.. ohh ya dabhand can help me out (or heck anyones welcome). I dont need anything super high end as i have about a 500 usd max for a budget. I plan on running 1 or 2 tf2 servers and maybe some other games later. I also plan on running a set of Teamspeak servers off it. (i have the license to 512 slot 10 server limit deal). Please post links to the hardware you suggest. I prefeer newegg but will gladly take other sites that ship In the USA (arizona to be exact)

Edit: Sorry if this is best in OT but i was unsure if this was better here in GD or OT (being its semi game related but not entirely)

Why not pay for cheap hosting that comes with decent server space and support for teamspeak/ventrillo and game hosting?

Some of the american sites offer expensive stuff though, but in Europe its more common and decent prices.

A simple server, can come in at (pounds) £210-£600 depending on hardware etc, but the real killer is Windows Server 2008 which can come in at £500.

But if you have some Unix/Linux knowledge you can grab some free Linux builds out there.

Check some American wholesalers you might get lucky, I know a few in the UK offer cash back on them for writing a review about it etc (can vary from £100-150 cash back depending on the server/microserver)

I'm with DAB- just pay for a hosting plan. Even after you've gotten everything, the maintenance and upkeep of a server can become expensive, as well as time consuming.

You're also dependant on your ISP for your bandwidth. You'd be better checking with them if they'd have any problems with you running a server before planning to buy anything.

@sky I have asked them already + checked the AUP. Only thing i cant run is a webserver without the businesses plan.

Fair enough . I can just imagine phoning my ISP about doing that and waiting for them to stop laughing long enough to speak.

But, since I'm not adding anything, and I know nothing about servers, I'll exit stage left and good luck.

If you said that to VirginMedia employees they would take that chance to lie that you should be on a business line :P And tell you its about 200 quid a month.

They actually tried this with me years ago, I had a server running which was tied to my till at my store (sold it a while back), they tried to get me on a 50mb dedicated line.. that was until I told them to shut up in not so many pleasent words.

They heard business and till and thought I was running my business from home, but I wasn't it was a simple stock checking program I ran when things were sold my program would warn me if I needed something restocking. Not running a business at all.

Anyways, I still think it would be cheaper to go to a host to do it, all the leg work is done then.

As for Windows Server 2008 not being legit, be careful, MS are in the process of making ISPs tell them about digital signatures of OS's and from there be able to kill your OS and put pressure on your ISP to take you offline also. Just sayin :P

Well I did mention some hints if you were going to get one, some wholesellers or stores offer money back on purchases by doing something, will save you $100-200.

As for what you need you don't need anything extravagant.
