I ask the guy who you can buy the house from in Windhelm and says there was trouble recently and isn't quite ready yet. I ask all around town about the butcher to no avail.

Is there a way either I can find the console code to start the quest or another input so he will finally sell me the house/furnishings?

    Thanks!

No. Because the house itself is involved in a quest. And one of the "furnishing" options is removing the... clutter... that the last inhabitant left behind.

After purchasing Hjerim, walk around the city, near the cemetary to be specific, and you'll find yourself a little scene. Talk to the guard.

From that scene, follow the little red trail on the ground...

That's pretty much as spoiler-less as I can put it, lol.

By the by, if you already got to this stage, you will simply have to talk to people. A beggar woman (forgot her name), the Guard from the scene, and the Jarl's steward are the people to talk to once the investigation begins.

on my last (bugged) playthrough, I did get this far, however, I went into the house for clues, and that's where the quest started. Solved it in 5 mins flat. lol
