it depends whether you want to heal dps or tank? or even swap between all 3, i love my ret pally, seal of light means whilst dealing damage you heal yourself, so you rip in pvp, and rarely die in pve, if you prefer a farcasting dps then i'd say warlock or shaman, locks do amazing damage over time, and shamans have healing and dps talent trees, so it all depends on your style of play, theres not a single best class, its just all about learning your own style of play, personally i love ret pallys as they deal a massive amount of melee damage, and i can choose between tank dps or healing talent tree specs

try death knight they can take some serious punishment especially if going blood talent.. i think the key to unlock said class is at least one character level 50 or above and one death knight/server on your account.
Since there are people who give me crap for my grammar and is to lazy to check my profile I will say it here as well. I am dyslexic so give me a break as I *TRY* to spell correctly.

you need a character at lvl 55, and you are allowed one death knight per server

and unholy would be the pvp talent tree choice

It's my understanding that you can pretty much go to any teacher once you've gotten the basics of your own original craft, but I could be wrong & I really don't know how to do it.

I'm still with 3 characters stuck in either level 1, 2, or 3 & can't figure out how to advance or where to find guidance. Can you help? If so, then I can give more detail!

Thanks for your time et al.

    Sincerely,
    Jo Bounds

Well, I wouldn't recommend starting off trying to tank or heal if you have never played before (its harder than you think). So stick to dps and since everything can dps well than you will have to narrow that search down. I will just list everything.
edit:THIS IS ALL MY OPINION, how i feel will not be the same way you feel, but i hope this helps.

Hunters get pets and shoot with arrows/guns, pet will take most dmg unless you do more than it.
Warrior is up close and personal, so if you like heavy armor and close combat good choice.
Mages as you probably can tell and range magic, it helps if you want to pve to go frost as they get a water element that will be like a hunter pet.
Shaman are awesome(in my honest view), i love them. they get totems, they are great at solo pve, can range and melee well.
Paladin are the same, except no range dmg all close and personal. but they can heal and bubble and get out of trouble (it rhymes :P). Paladins can be heal, dps and tank so when you get to 85 and want to heal or tank you can still be a pally .
Rogues are the stealthy class, ninja kinda, can pick locks, vanish, backstab, cheap shot etc.
Druids have the same thing as Pally's and can be tanks, dps and heals. In there dps they can be melee or range so that is nice for a change, ( i think i forgot to mention shammies can too). Druids can shapeshift to birds, bears, cats, water thing :P, and depending on your talent tree, healing tree, bird (boomkin), or tiger thing.
Priest can be a great healing class, they can also be a shadow priest which does, you guessed it, shadow dmg.
Warlocks get demon pets which i liked, especially the fel guard, takes on 2-3 guys at once.

I would suggest doing mostly pve, as it is easier to learn the game that way. do the occasional pvp battleground, and dont be like most people and try and be serious have fun with the battle grounds. i personal would start a new character as a shaman, pally or druid. i find those are easy to use and have nice skills.
just personal message me if you want some more advice, happy to help.
