    "originally posted by Rise_Against:

I just realized that 2(9+3) should go first as DABhand said. So it would be everything in that bracket multiplied by 2 and then 48 divided by that answer. So the correct answer should be 2."

But for that to be, the equation would have to be 48/(2(9+3)). However, no part of 48/2 is bracketed, therefore is its own individual division.

You can assume the brackets are implied, but generally if they should be there they are. Refer to my previous post about hoofbeats.

An interesting note was that when plugged into C#, the compiler interpreted the 2(9+3) part as the 2 being a call to a method with '9+3' as the argument and threw an error. You had to modify it as 2 * ( 9 + 3 ) before it will accept it as a math problem. The terminal output was 288.

i myself used to be math addict, that's when i'm at school, but since i'm getting older,i'm having some memory gaps and getting slow in thinking and kinda forgotten many things i did to make my math subject really easy for me,like forming my own way of solving problems...

since i'm old now,yet as far as i last knew,as long as there's no bracket or no mention that division would be go 1st,the rules is always multiplication 1st before division, that's the last i know, maybe new mathematicians are now making their new laws and rules in problem solving...

and the last time i was at school,2007,college,uhm,the problem solving i'm dealing with muchly is about trigonometric things( you know, the thing where there is horrizontal and vertical lines that are intersecting, then you figure out something or make shapes) and algebraic things(where you figure out what was missing or which letters should not be added/subtracted or should be multiplied/divided,which is sometimes confusing since ther's so many letters being used)...

so i'm really kinda keen on this kind of matter, yet still as i said, the mathematical rule states that multiplication 1st before division...

    if i'm not mistaken...

    48/2(9+3)
    would be like this...

    48
    2(9+3)

unless rules and mathematical solutions where changed by the last few years...

or that symbol that i just find out which means "half then multiply" is considered a bracket on its own which would make the equation like this...

    (48/2)(9+3)

since that symbol stated half the multiply, then division should come 1st before multiplication...

but as i said before i'm getting rusty on math,so i'm not really intending to argue, just wanna help up,but also add somethings on my knowledge, like that symbol which means "half then multiply" which i just recently added to my knowledge, and i hope it stays on my memory...

aging and lacking of practice could rust up someone's memory, like mine.....

I put it into my calculator and it tells me it's 2.

Here, I put a video to show you. Link (also, before you ask I have no idea why a second mouse is just chilling out on my desktop. also, it was my first time testing out my screen recorder, so I didn't know where the "stop" was, so that's why the ending was so long. And i wasn't going to bother editing it out..i'm too lazy)

    Here it is in C#:

While, 2!=2*1=2, if you made this same mistake if were like 4 ie. 4!=4*3*2*1=/=4. you would run into some problems...
