...Since the days of Decent and then Freelancer there have been tons of games that have tried to mimic the style but fall short in one way or another. Either overly complicated gameplay trying to be too "realistic" or just crummy controls and/or graphics. I recently stumbled upon the game Starpoint Gemini. Not bad but as an indie game the graphics are just about par.
I wanted to know if anyone could point me in the right direction of a worthy game in this genre. Though I do prefer the Third-Person camera such-as that from Freelancer I'm not too picky...but I do hate crappy graphics or god awful controls. When I say crappy...I mean really crappy. Starpoint Gemini for example is on par with that of indie and isn't all that bad. Controls on the other-hand... if I fly into one more station because of a bumble bee effect. lol
I know I'm asking for a lot; was just hoping there was something I might have missed in the vast world of games out there. (Bad pun not intended.) So feel free to just spit out what you can think of. Thanks CH!

It's worth it to pull out X-Wing and TIE Fighter games. There's a series of graphical updates to X-Wing Alliance that makes it pretty nice looking for a 12 year old game (if graphics are your thing). And some updates for TIE Fighter and whatnot.

Ya dead genre is an understatement lol. I'm almost tempted to reinstall freelancer. Dark Star One doesn't look too bad though for what it is. Might give it a try.

X3: Reunion/Terran Conflict is a great game, and it looks great too if you're after graphics.
The only problem is a lot of the missions are very tedious, and once you've gotten to the point where you can easily build your own self-sustaining complex and think you've found all the storylines you can (it's kinda difficult to find some, difficult to get the a stage where you can activate others), it gets pretty boring unless you're looking to just aimlessly fly around the galaxy (which is fun in itself sometimes). There's a huge mod community though, so that helps extend gameplay a lot, especially the smaller ones like auto-/long distance trading and such.
It takes a good while to get to that point though; longer than your average games' storyline.

that's a very very tedious game Sky. in my opinion way too tedious to prove actually enjoyable. i had such a hard time getting used to its controls and stuff.
